The Kestrel 200EMS was my dream bike too and when one showed up for sale in the classified section of Velo News I called the guy and bought it for, IIRR, $2,000

White, GP-4 tubulars, 8v down tube shifters, Campy Record cranks, Chorus brakes, Campy aero cage and bottle. It came out of Florida and had a straight block 12×19. That got swapped out right away LOL! After I had it a few months I bought a set of Record ergo levers.

    Loved that bike!

Looking at one of the FaceBook sites for classic steel bikes got me wondering where my old bikes ended up. I traded in my first real bike, the Nishiki, and it stayed locally. One of the bike shop guys told me he saw a woman riding it around town. I was happy to know it was still getting used but I wonder about the rest. Who has them? Do they still ride the bike that I had so much fun on? Where did they end up? Sold these: Nishiki Semi-Pro Trek 1500 Kestrel 200EMS Cadex CRM-2 Bianchi BUSS Bianchi EV2 Santana Sovereign (gave to daughter) Bianchi Pista Bianchi Axis Focus Mares (broke, warranty) Haro Flightline 29’er Haro Flighline 27.5 (gave to son-in-law) Unicycle Bianchi Milano Bianchi Milano (gave to daughter) Still own: Co-Motion Tandem Carl Strong Ti Carl Strong Fe Gios Focus Mares Masi EVO Ritchey Break-away Ti Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt

Life was so much simpler at the front. But not always possible.

I love the race advice “just ride about 3 or 4 wheels back” …yeah, just like the rest of the 50 guys in the field. (insert eye roll here)

“Can’t anybody here play this game?”

“Can’t anybody here ride a bike?”

Group ride Saturday 200k. First big group road ride of the year. About 30 of us.
I dropped my wife off at the airport and drove up a few miles to link up with the group. Lopped off about 20 miles on each end. Heading to a hole in the wall town with a cafe famous for pie. Nice rest stop.

On the way back one of the guys running tubeless on non-tubeless tires (gravel set up, 45mm tires, who knows what PSI) and on aerobars no less, has the front tire blow off the rim so violently it lifted the front of the bike up 3 or 4″. The guy hit the deck so fast it was nutty! Smashed his helmet, road rash, torn shorts and jersey. Wasn’t KO’d but we made him stay down for a few minutes to make sure he was OK.
Someone said, “He didn’t even get a chance to put out his hand to brake the fall.” Brake the fall?!? The only thing that would have broke would have been his wrist. Physics and anatomy 101

Meanwhile a minute or so behind us some kid did a repeat performance of an episode from last year when he stood on a climb and pulled a rookie move– stand and slow down. The guy behind overlapped wheels and went down. You would think he’d have some slight clue that HE is the one causing the wrecks.

One of the guys slid over next to me when we were cruising along and said something like, “There are three of us here that know how to ride a bike.”

Which is why on rides such as this if I can’t be close to the front, I’ll be found off the back. Having someone take me out has zero appeal.

The sad thing is I really like a good group ride but they are tough to find.

Not much to add… he’s a punk and has already been given too many chances.

Ineos was stupid for giving him a contract, they guy should be one of those unemployed ex-pros relegated to racing gran fondos.

Watch what happens when people can’t get things like electronics, furniture and medicine.

This… medicine in particular. The amount of drugs (legal ) we get from China is big and the amount of drug components manufacturers get from there is sufficient that we could have some major disruptions to the supply chain. I told my wife (anesthetist) that it’s a good thing we have a number of domestic distilleries, she might need them in surgery. “Sorry, we’re out of propofol but here’s a fifth of Kentucky’s finest and a stick to bite on.”

Agree. He’s capable of one monster day so a one week race or a single day he can look good but not for a grand tour. He doesn’t appear to have that many bullets so he goes to the front, wags his elbow and expects everyone else to do the work while he sits in.

Dallas is a 7 hour drive from home. My wife and I are heading down and it would be cool to meet up if anyone from here is going.

And the new, unreleased version seen under MVP is less ugly with the new hidden cable layout.

I’m certainly no pro but carrying the bike on that oddball TT/ST/SS intersection would throw the weight balance too far forward. If I were 6′ 4″ it might make sense… the bike could just hang down but for 95% of the cycling population it just seems gimmicky.

Looking at race photos I hardly ever see Alvarado or MVdP with the bike on their shoulder like that. For that matter it’s tough to find Nys with his Colnago Cross Prestige carrying a bike with his shoulder in that odd little 1/4 circle.

    Marketing > Practicality or Engineering

…and for the record I am a Colnago fan but used a Cross Cup rather than the Cross Prestige over the looks. How’s that for petty?

Yuck on both the Canyon and the Pinarello. The former looks like they cobbled up the tt/dt/st intersection and had to use a bucket of body filler, the latter looks like a Salvador Dalí painting.

*Disclaimer. I like Dalí’s art but a melted bike is not my things.

in reply to: Happy New Year! #36797

Started the new year hiking in the Ozark mountains in northern Arkansas with my wife.
If the weather stays decent and I get my work done I’ll get in a few miles on the bike.

3600 miles… about average for me
