in reply to: Mavic into receivership #36568
There are several of us who are skeptical of US private equity funds in general, they’re sort of like a snake. When they bite everyone feigns shock as if the snakes nature is to serve tea and crumpets.
But back to Mavic, sad day if the iconic yellow support vehicles disappear.
One of the rims I wanted but never bought, was the one with the ceramic braking surface.
in reply to: Paging CK, TT geek talk #36843Second attempt this afternoon.
South wind so we had 9 miles side wind. Tougher conditions than a few days ago.
Installed my clip ons and did a 15 minute warm up. Not real smooth on them yet.
Wattage down from last time, 188. Just didn’t have much snap.
21.9 average. O.6mph faster
I’ve got a set of latex tubes on order.
Sort of having fun with this. Thanks for the tips.

I’ve got a set of clip ons that I’ll dig out and dust off. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice so I’ll give it another go. Nobody in town carries latex tubes so I’ll need to get them on line.
in reply to: Paging CK, TT geek talk #36835The Covid-19 time trial series enters week two. The course is a four corner loop with a second smaller loop so there’s 8 90* turns. The turns are open and smooth you can take at 85% power. Decent pavement but not butter smooth, one section that’s a bit choppy. The route begs for a legit TT bike and most of the top ten or so have some sort of aero setup ranging from clip-ons to deep section wheels to disc to full on TT bike. Not that I’m wanting to buy anything but I am curious how much improvement I could get with clip-ons, disc wheel, latex tubes, or whatever. 138 pounds 16 pound bike 20km course, 265′ of climbing 195watts I averaged 21.3 mph (34 minutes 47 seconds) Good enough for 11th out of 26 I’m not time trialist but can stay reasonably aero on this course– in the drops or on the hoods with elbows in and forearms flat. Top time was 30:55 About 10 of us within a 2:00 time slot
in reply to: We lost one #36732Sorry, thin. Sober times indeed.
in reply to: New dates for the Tour, Giro and Vuelta #36414CK, thanks. With Mrs. CK’s condition my wife said to tell you to hang on to them for yourselves. That’s generous.

in reply to: New dates for the Tour, Giro and Vuelta #36408Segue into my current rant– since my wife is the anesthetist whose face is literally inches away from infected people as she intubates them to keep them alive I hear the words “open it back up” as, “Dale, let’s let your wife take one for the team” and frankly if it were YOUR wife whose life is at risk over restarting the economy you might take a different tack.
And when she and the others in anesthesia get sick along with the pulmonologists and critical care nurses whose going to fill in? Jamie Dimon or the head of the Fed? Good freaking luck having one of them do your emergency appendectomy, c-section, or provide the correct dose of propofol.
She’s gone from having a new N-95 mask every procedure to having two a week. Two.
And where she practices there hasn’t been a huge spike in cases. God help us all if there is.in reply to: Social distancing TT event #36739One of the local clubs is doing a Social Distance TT. 12 mile out-and-back with the usual TT rules with a couple of new ones to basically make it a Strava segment we post on private FB page. Screenshot of the time and date then at the end of the week results will be posted. You get as many chances as you want, just post your best time once a week. Two weekly alternating courses. Entry fee? $10.00 suggested donation to some local charity that’s hard hit due to COVID-19 I told them I’m doing it on a mbt so everyone will blame a poor showing on my choice of bike instead of the real reason… I’m slow

in reply to: cleaning the chain #36611It boggles my mind that a cleaner can damage steel but it appears to be the case.
Rock and Roll lube is my favorite. I’ve got a hold-dozen bottles of other brands that I’m too cheap to throw out or give away. I sue those when the conditions are crappy and I know I’ll do a full blown chain scrubbing afterwords.
Ben, I hang my mbt and cx bikes by the front wheel, I’ve flipped them numerous times while wrecking, and laid them down on their side so many times I can’t count. While they might be overdue for a fluid service I’ve never had an issue with any of them. I think the upside down warning is an urban legend.

I don’t care how superior a dog’s VO2max is, I’d clobber every one of them in a contest of thumb wrestling. But back to Stamstad, yeah he didn’t go as far, as fast, etc. but he was not in his native environment. You stick 1,000 Siberian huskies out doors in the snow and they WANT to run. Give 1,000 people the opportunity to go outside when it’s 20* and 995 of them will tell you to bugger off.
in reply to: Bat Woman to the rescue! #36904What’s interesting is her name, Shi Zhengli, translates to Smith in English and in her honor they are naming this current strain the Smith-Corona virus.
…thank you, thank you. Be sure to tip the waitstaff. I’ll be here all week.
