The Covid-19 time trial series enters week two. The course is a four corner loop with a second smaller loop so there’s 8 90* turns. The turns are open and smooth you can take at 85% power. Decent pavement but not butter smooth, one section that’s a bit choppy. The route begs for a legit TT bike and most of the top ten or so have some sort of aero setup ranging from clip-ons to deep section wheels to disc to full on TT bike. Not that I’m wanting to buy anything but I am curious how much improvement I could get with clip-ons, disc wheel, latex tubes, or whatever. 138 pounds 16 pound bike 20km course, 265′ of climbing 195watts I averaged 21.3 mph (34 minutes 47 seconds) Good enough for 11th out of 26 I’m not time trialist but can stay reasonably aero on this course– in the drops or on the hoods with elbows in and forearms flat. Top time was 30:55 About 10 of us within a 2:00 time slot

    IN order of greatest improvement:

Clip-ons (but move your saddle forward a bit if you can so you can rotate your hips and lower you body)
Latex tubes (up to +10w right there)
Fast rubber….Vittoria Corsa Speed G+ tires are super-fast and super comfy.

What helmet are you using? A good aero road helmet will save a lot of watts too.

    Vittoria Diamanté Pro tires

    Giro Synthe helmet

I’ve got a set of clip ons that I’ll dig out and dust off. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice so I’ll give it another go. Nobody in town carries latex tubes so I’ll need to get them on line.

Couldn’t find any actual data on the Diamante tires, but based on price points, etc. I’d say you can save more than a few watts (and make for a much improved overall ride) if you get some new skins. Likely ~10-15w.

Just make sure you don’t pull a CK and have those clip ons rattle off your handlebars.

The gift that keeps on giving lol.

You two should get a room!

    Second attempt this afternoon.

South wind so we had 9 miles side wind. Tougher conditions than a few days ago.

Installed my clip ons and did a 15 minute warm up. Not real smooth on them yet.

Wattage down from last time, 188. Just didn’t have much snap.

    21.9 average. O.6mph faster

I’ve got a set of latex tubes on order.

Sort of having fun with this. Thanks for the tips.

Pretty normal for wattage to drop a bit when in aero…..a 10w drop is pretty minimal, so that is good. Plus, even with the drop and tougher conditions, you went .8mph faster.

    Awesome!!
