2012 Tour de France winner announces his return; Weening steals the GC from Riblon

Bradley WigginsBrad Wiggins (Sky Procycling) put a personal stamp on his return papers to professional racing, leaving the field behind in the 37km final time trial in the Tour of Poland. It was a strong field that Wiggins crushed, with Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack-Leopard) second, 56 seconds slower.

Stage four winner Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) was third, at 1’14” back.

Phinney’s team-mate Marco Pinotti set the early best mark at both the intermediate time check and the finish line. Pinotti’s mark at the intermediate check actually stood the entirety of the day, with even Wiggins coming through slower. But on the line, Pinotti would take fourth, in 47’56”. This meant that the British rider made up a minute and 22 seconds on Pinotti in the flat second portion of the course.

With the way the Tour of Poland shaped up, there were two races going on at once on Saturday, with the battle for the stage and the race for the overall. While Wiggins left no doubt in his victory in the stage, the gaps between the general classification men were razor thin.

In the end, Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge) got the biggest overall triumph of his career, erasing a 27-second deficit to Christophe Riblon (AG2R La Mondiale) to take the WorldTour victory. The Dutchman was 43 seconds quicker than Riblon, putting a 16-second buffer on him and dropping Riblon to third overall. Jon Izaguirre (Euskaltel-Euskadi) finished his effort strongly to maintain second place overall, finishing 13 seconds behind Weening overall.

“It was a fantastic performance,” said Sky’s director in Poland, Dan Hunt, on the team website. “He made a massive statement today and he has done really well. It was a real lesson in how to time trial. We went out this morning and researched the course and it was obvious that it suited Brad. The climbs suited him, the descents suited him and then it was a flying, rolling run-in into Kraków. He absolutely smashed it. We had been looking at Cancellara to see how he was going, but you never know. But Bradley rode his own race, didn’t think about anyone else and won by nearly a minute. That is an impressive performance whichever way you look at. It definitely confirms where his condition is.”

The course was split into two halves, the first being rolling and technical. Following the intermediate time check, flat roads lined the run-in to the finish in Kraków. The early top five were Cancellara, Phinney, Pinotti, Jesse Sergent (Radioshack-Leopard), and Nikolay Mihailov (CCC Polsat Polkowice), until Wiggins blew through in a time of 46’36”, which would place him as the only rider under 47 minutes for the day.

With Pinotti’s blazing time at the intermediate check, his time, and that of the three other specialists, would serve as benchmarks for the less heralded general classification riders coming through later. Intermediate times approaching those of the powerhouses would be a positive indication for the GC men.

During the wait for the last five to come through, Ivan Santaromita (BMC Racing) did himself some favours at the mid-point check, while Alex Howes (Garmin-Sharp) was obviously dropping time, outside the top 70 at the intermediate split. The Italians Ivan Basso (Cannondale) and Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R La Mondiale) were off to good starts, as was Eros Capecchi (Movistar).

Though Weening’s style looked laboured, rocking his shoulders and pedaling a slow cadence, the Dutchman was deceptively quick. He was fifth best at the intermediate time split, just three seconds slower than Phinney. The Orica-GreenEdge rider had put down the benchmark time that Sergio Henao (Sky Procycling), Rafal Majka (Saxo-Tinkoff), Izaguirre, and Riblon would be aiming for.

As it turned out, all would lose significant chunks of time to Weening at the split. The diminutive Henao pedaled through 18 seconds slower than Weening, and Majka lost 24 seconds at the intermediate time check. Izaguirre came through worst off, at 26’35”, more than a half-minute back. It wasn’t long before the yellow jersey of Riblon roared by, splitting a 26’08”, better than the Spaniard, but losing 18 seconds to Weening.

With no other checks on the course, the flat second portion of the time trial would decide the overall. With everyone understandably far off the time of Wiggins, he could begin cleaning up for the podium presentation, and all eyes could turn to the battle for the general classification.

Capecchi was notably solid, making up his two-minute start behind Robert Kiserlovski (Radioshack-Leopard) and moving up in the standings. Pozzovivo was solid by his standards as well, finishing in 49’28”.

Then Weening grimaced over the line, clocking a 48’20” and sending everyone to their calculators to figure target times for the remaining riders. Henao was unable to improve over the second half of the course, finishing in 49’14” and eventually dropping to fifth place overall. Majka was burying himself in front of the home crowd, stopping the watch at 48’53”, and he would have to wait until the final two men came home to see if a podium place would be his.

Izaguirre had ridden a version of the Wiggins time trial however, blasting over the final flats and overtaking all the GC men save for Weening, finishing in 48’41”.

But crucially, Riblon was unable to crack the 49-minute barrier, finishing in 49’03”, outside the time needed to hang on to his yellow jersey.

Wiggins and Weening had their victories, Izaguirre hung on to second for Euskaltel-Euskadi, and Riblon fell to third, the lone disappointment in a sparkling summer for the Frenchman.
