Set to build on Giro d’Italia podium earlier this year

Vincenzo NibaliLiquigas-Doimo rider Vincenzo Nibali announced his good form prior to the Vuelta a España today with a win at home in the Trofeo Melinda.  The 25 year old beat Russian Vladislav Borisov into second, with compatriot Giovanni Visconti rounding out the podium in third.

“This victory gives me happiness and peace of mind,” Nibali said after the race.  “In a week I will face an important commitment at the Vuelta a España and couldn’t ask for better fuel for my journey.”

Today marks Nibali’s sixth win of 2010, including a stage and third place overall in the Giro d’Italia.  The Italian will head into the Spanish Grand Tour next week with high ambitions for the overall.

“I’ve gained more confidence in my potential,” he said, adding that he’s also become better tactically.

“This year I’ve had some nice wins, and I hope to achieve some more success from here to the end of season.”

Nibali was the best out of a group of eight riders, and will hope his show of form will earn him selection to the national team for the world championships in October.  Paolo Bettini will be making his debut as the director for Italy, replacing his good friend Franco Ballerini following his death in a tragic rally car accident earlier this year.
