Wim Van Huffel is only 30-years-old but he may approach the end of his career very soon. He is still without a team for 2010. His 2009 team, the Austrian Vorarlberg – Corratec squad, decided to not extend his contract.
“I haven’t found a new team,” he told Sportwereld. “The past months I didn’t hear anything from anybody. At Vorarlberg-Corratec had they made me believe I could stay, but at the end of November I received a letter that I won’t get a new contract.”
Van Huffel doesn’t want to quit racing and thinks about starting in the Elite without contract class in Belgium. “For me there is no other option than to go looking for a job,” Vanhuffel said about his approaching end to his professional career.
Van Huffel had a rocky start and was twice riding as a trainee (in 2000 with Flanders – Prefetex and in 2001 with Lotto – Adecco). In both cases he was unable to secure a contract, and ended up riding for the Belgian Vlaanderen-T-Interim for three years.
In 2005 he was finally picked up by Davitamon – Lotto and immediately finished 11th in the Giro d’Italia. He stayed with the team for four years, until 2008. His results were neither bad nor great (he finished 17th in the 2006 Giro d’Italia), so he had to look for a new team for 2009.
Vorarlberg-Corratec picked him up, but he had a mediocre year, with his best performances being 11th in the GP Judendorf-Strassengel, and 14th on stage two of the Tour of Austria while only managing 24th overall.
