Cannondale rider fights off challenge from Anderson in stage 7 finale

USA Pro ChallengePeter Sagan (Cannondale) made it a clean sweep of the flat stage finishes in the USA Pro Challenge, winning his fourth stage of the seven on Sunday in Denver. Sagan fought through some traffic in the finale and came up to Ryan Anderson (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies), who was already sprinting.

He had less than 100 metres to get around, but Sagan put in one more acceleration to come around Anderson, grabbing his fourth stage by a bike length.

Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing) kept his powder dry during seven of the eight circuits around Denver to conclude the USA Pro Challenge, and then even came forward on the final lap to put in a turn for BMC sprinter Greg Van Avermaet. He celebrated the overall victory safely tucked in the main bunch, just as Sagan was notching his stage victory ahead.

“I felt like this was a long time coming. I’ve been so close [to winning] before,” said Van Garderen, referring to his second and third places in 2012 and 2011. “Races are difficult to be motivated for after July, but with this race on the calendar, it wasn’t a question on if I was going to stay motivated at all.

“This is my hometown race, so I wanted it bad. It feels amazing to finally get this.”

How it played out:

It didn’t take long for four men to get away, as from the drop of the flag, it was Ben King (Radioshack), Christopher Juul Jensen (Saxo-Tinkoff), David Lozano Riba (Novo Nordisk) and Carson Miller (Jamis-Hagens Berman) who formed the break. Soon, Chun Kai Feng (Champion System), Lucas Euser (UnitedHealthcare) and Tyler Wren (Jamis-Hagens Berman) made their way across, and the seven riders pulled out an early advantage of a minute.

The peloton was lined out though, and the break was kept close by the pressure of the peloton. After one lap of the scheduled eight trips around Denver, Chris Froome (Sky Procycling) pulled off and got directions back to the team bus, the Brit heading home just a bit early with some reported chest congestion, and having gotten the altitude training he desired.

With two laps gone, King led his group over the line 1’15” ahead of the main bunch. Two laps later, the bunch hit the halfway point with a similar advantage, as Cannondale, BMC, and Colombia were pulling the peloton.

Everything held form until there were just more than two laps left to race, when Wren heard that the peloton was coming back and put in an attack. The rest of the escapees responded to Wren, so Euser made a move of his own and hit the finish line with a small gap, and 30km to go.

The peloton had been on a charge, cutting the gap to under 45 seconds, but they turned off the gas again to put off the catch. But the breakaway broke under the pressure of Euser’s move, and they were gradually pulled back one-by-one by the main bunch.

To have any hope of making it stick, Euser was going to need help, and he got it when King and Miller came back to him. But the trio had just a half-minute on the BMC and Cannondale-led peloton.

But the main group had them in their sights, and just as the catch was being made, Juul Jensen came down in a crash with Josh Edmondson near the back of the field. Edmondson packed it in, but Juul Jensen got a new bike to finish. Beginning his final kilometres racing in the United States, Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Sharp) led the Cannondale over the line to start the final lap.

More teams were making their intentions known on the final lap, beginning with UnitedHealthcare, working for Alessandro Bazzana. Jelly Belly-Kenda was also working, lining up American road champion Freddie Rodriguez. With 3km to go, BMC brought forward all their forces for Van Avermaet, with even van Garderen in line.

No team could muster much of a lead out however, but Sagan had one man left to pull him up toward Anderson, who had gotten the jump. The Optum rider had left the other sprinters behind him, so only Sagan could spoil his day.

The Slovak kicked around his left side for his fourth stage prize, as well as the final green jersey.

In the third edition of the race, van Garderen has stood on the final overall podium in all three, but he collected his first victory on Sunday afternoon.
