No decision yet on when injured Australian will return to racing
Rabobank rider Michael Matthews’ enforced withdrawal from Tirreno Adriatico today has put a question mark over his chances of riding Milan-Sanremo, with the rider losing out on a key preparation event for the Classic.
The Australian made his debut in the race last year and with a full year of pro racing under his belt, the 2010 world under 23 champion would be a strong addition to the team for the Classic. His characteristics of being a rapid sprinter but also a solid climber on shorter hills would suit the event.
However his crash on yesterday’s stage of Tirreno Adriatico plus his inability to start today’s stage means that he now faces a wait to see if he will get the nod.
“Michael wanted to race today,” Rabobank’s Luuc Eisenga told VeloNation today. “He was ready in his kit, but started to get dizzy. As health is the most important thing, we decided that we wouldn’t take any risks.
“We sent him with the team doctor to the next hotel. We’ll assess the situation, but for the moment we can’t say when Michael returns to competition.”
Matthews had a solid debut in 2011, winning stages in the Santos Tour Down Under and the Volta a Murcia, and taking the Rund um Köln.
The 21 year old had a solid start to this year, finishing ninth overall in the Santos Tour Down Under and winning the Clasica de Almeria.
Milan-Sanremo will take place in eight day’s time.
