michael morkovWith a number of Saxo Bank riders rumoured to be following the Schleck brothers to their new Luxembourg team, the Danish team has extended its contract with Michael Mørkøv. The 25-year-old Dane, who is a multiple national champion and World Cup winner on the track, has been part of Bjarne Riis’ team since 2009 will now remain there through 2012.

“Michael is a rock solid, loyal and powerful rider who has an eye for the importance of team spirit,” said Riis, “and I’m very happy to have him on the Team for another two years. His tireless commitment throughout the whole year calls for recognition and with his growing potential, I’m considering him in the line-up for the spring classics next year.”

Mørkøv himself was extremely happy to extend his stay with the Danish team.

“I’m very proud about being able to continue my work with Team Saxo Bank,” he said. “It’s an extremely well organized team and working with the other riders, the management and the rest of the staff is definitely making me a better rider.”

This season the 25-year-old Dane rode and finished the Giro d’Italia, his first Grand Tour, but also wants to continue racing on the track; something in which Saxo Bank supports him.

“I’m happy that Bjarne recognizes my talent and is willing to help me develop my potential,” he continued. “Besides, I’m grateful that Bjarne sees the importance of me and Alex [Rasmussen] participating in the track season where we have celebrated a great deal of triumphs.”
