Tight lipped on next destination, thinking only about the upcoming Vuelta
While Euskaltel-Euskadi was able to secure the coveted signatures of Samuel Sanchez, Romain Sicard, and Igor Anton for next season, there was also great hope that another young talent and podium finisher at this year’s Vuelta al Pais Vasco, Benat Intxausti, would also follow suit.
Intxausti, however, has opted to head for a new opportunity in 2011. The 24 year old was humble in his remarks as he prepares to suit up for his final Grand Tour with the Basque team.
“I want to thank the team Euskaltel-Euskadi, Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano, and Miguel Madariaga for the confidence they have placed in me throughout this season, which allowed me to have a very good year and continue my progression.”
The 3rd overall at the Vuelta Asturias and 2nd overall at the Tour of the Basque Country is looking forward though, and Euskaltel was not able to approach the Basque climber with what he was looking for.
“We have not reached an agreement though, and as a young rider, I think it is better for me to continue my career with another team where I can continue to evolve. I do not rule out the possibility of someday returning to Euskaltel-Euskadi, the team of my country, with which, I repeat, has totally defined me.”
When asked about the possibilities for 2011, Intxausti would not speak of his options. At the moment, there is only one thing on his mind: the start of the Vuelta a Espana in Sevilla on August 28th.
“Currently, I am only thinking about the Vuelta a Espana, and I hope to continue the momentum, both mine and that of the team. I will quietly decide later where I will go for the future.”
While the Vuelta will be an important race for him, it appears that his 2nd place overall in his homeland’s tour meant a lot to him, and forms the basis for one of his future goals.
“For me, the podium of the Tour of the Basque Country this year was unforgettable, and I hope I can win at home one day.”
It will be interesting to see where the young rider ends up for 2011. There are a lot of teams in the market right now for gifted, young climbers.
