Portuguese rider takes final victory in mountain time trial

rui costaRui Costa (Movistar) took a final overall victory in the 2013 Tour de Suisse with an emphatic win in the final stage nine time trial, between Bad Ragaz and the Flumserberg. The Portuguese rider, who was defending his title from the 2012 edition of the WorldTour race, completed the 26.8km course – which featured 16.5km of flat roads before the final 10.3km climb to the finish – in a time of 51 minutes and 56 seconds, to go 21 seconds faster than the previous best time set by Estonian Tanel Kangert (Astana). Bauke Mollema (Blanco) finished the stage in third place, 29 seconds behind Costa.

Costa’s victory shattered any hope of a Swiss rider taking a home victory, with yellow jersey Mathias Frank (BMC Racing) unable to defend his race lead. The 26-year-old, who had held the race lead since stage three, was unable to compete with Costa on the mountain time trial and finished in 19th place, losing 1’56” to the Movistar rider.

Mollema’s performance was enough to lift him onto second place on the final podium, leapfrogging Roman Kreuziger (Saxo-Tinkoff), who lost exactly a minute to Costa in the time trial and dropped to third.

“We knew that this stage was bound to decide the race, and that’s why I came last week to recon it – it already looked bloody hard to me,” said Costa after his victory. “Chente [Garcia Acosta, Movistar directeur sportif] also came to inspect it before the start of the race and we had already decided it was needed to change bikes before the climbs because it was a long climb, an effort longer than half an hour.

“I rode really focused and keeping an eye on the watts, but as soon as I saw the references were good, I pulled the gas a bit off in the final 3k of flat to breathe a bit before the climb. The bike change was fast and Chente drove me through the climb brilliantly, giving me all references and supporting me all the way to the top. I kept a constant pace because I knew it was crucial to stay on my own rhythm, from the foot to the top of the climb. At the hardest slopes, I already knew the GC was really close as well as the stage, so I went full gas and made the difference. It all went perfectly – I’m super happy.

“Every victory is different, and I got this one in quite a different way than last year’s,” Costa continued. “Then I grabbed the leader’s jersey too early, and that long week cost me a lot of energy. All those days on the podium, the press conference… that’s two hours off your recovery and that’s crucial. This time, I’m fresher at the end of the race, and got better and better feelings throughout the race. I didn’t have my best day in the first mountain-top finish, but I was able to recover from that initial loss.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without my team,” he added. “They were sensational, all week – this victory is dedicated to them, as well as the Portuguese fans, who came here to support me. Now it’s time to think about the Tour. My only goal for the moment is getting through the first week, always so dangerous – we’ll see how we do when it’s over. We’ll be one of the strongest teams in the race and we’re really excited. Before the Tour, I’ll be riding both National champs, the road race and the TT – it will be a good test for me.”

Some sprinters put in some surprising rides but it’s the specialists that prevail

Olivier Kaisen (Lotto-Belisol) was the first rider to start the 26.8km course, but the Belgian was caught and passed by Alex Rasmussen (Garmin-Sharp), who had started a minute behind, who set the first time of 1hr 01’51”. The Danish rider was soon pushed off the hotseat by Sam Bewley (Orica-GreenEdge), who finished in 1hr 00’29”, but the New Zealander was ousted in turn by veteran Australian Stuart O’Grady (Orica-GreenEdge), who was the first rider to go under the hour with 57’54”.

O’Grady himself was knocked off the top just a few minutes later, however, as Cyril Lemoine (Sojasun) posted 56’57”, but the Frenchman was to hold onto the lead for little more than a quarter of an hour. Norwegian sprinter Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) then surprised by going almost a minute faster, with 55’58”, and he was to remain in the hot spot for half an hour this time.

Kristoff’s teammate Gatis Smukulis was the one to finally knock him off the top of the leaderboard, with 55’35”, but the lead was to change hands several times in the next hour, as Daryl Impey (Orica-GreenEdge) posted 55’25”, Andreas Klöden 54’36”, and then Jesus Herrada recording exactly the same time as the German.

Jérémy Roy (FDJ) then set 54’18”, but Peter Sagan (Cannondale) then put in another surprising performance with 53’57”. The Slovakian wasn’t to be beaten for ten minutes, until Ion Izagirre (Euskaltel-Euskadi) finished in 53’23”, but the Basque rider was almost immediately deposed by Andrey Amador (Movistar) with 52’39”.

Jean-Christophe Péraud (AG2R La Mondiale) then went a single second faster than the Costa Rican rider, with 52’38”, but the top ten riders were now approaching the top of the climb.

Kangert was the first rider to go ahead of Péraud, however, as he finished in 52’17”, and none of the rest of the big names seemed to be able to match the Estonian. Mollema came close with 52’25”, which looked good enough to possibly lift the Dutchman onto the podium, while 23-year-old French climber Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) looked like he might be joining him with 52’51”.

Tipped as a possible stage, and race winner, Kreuziger could only manage 52’56”, which was just enough to keep him above Pinot, but saw him overtaken by Mollema. Costa was sprinting up the road, not far behind the Czech Saxo-Tinkoff rider, however, and crossed the line in 51’56” to take the lead.

With Frank the only rider still on the course, Costa was all but sure of victory as the Swiss rider struggled on the steep final kilometres. Clad in the all-yellow of race leader, Frank crossed the line exhausted in 19th place, with a time of 53’52”. Conceding almost two minute to Costa on the day, he slipped down to a final fifth place overall.
