Break holds off peloton to the line
Taking up where it left off last year when Mark Cavendish won four stages plus the overall classification, the Omega Pharma Quick Step team showed that the Manxman’s absence this time round from the Tour of Qatar would do nothing to blunt its ambitions.
The Belgian team quickly filled the void by grabbing the opening stage – and its first UCI road win of the year – when Niki Terpstra proved fastest out of a four man sprint to the line at Dukhan Beach.
The Dutch rider showed confidence and strong early season form in the finale, calmly marking Martin Elmiger (IAM Cycling) when he made his finishing move and then blasting past him to grab the stage. Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto Belisol) and Michael Schär (BMC Racing Team) also got past a weakening Elmiger to seal second and third, one second back, while the fifth rider in the break, Terpstra’s team-mate Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Cycling Team) just held off the Belgian squad’s leader Tom Boonen, who was first out of the peloton. The latter two were both seven seconds behind.
Terpstra explained how the success came about. “The first part of the stage was crosswinds so actually that was the hardest part,” he said. “In the end we had front wind, so the speed was going down, but then we attacked with five riders. Luckily we could keep a small gap until the finish. Fighting against the wind is always hard. But in the end we made it.”
He said that having another Omega Pharma Quick Step rider in the break was crucially important. “I’m really happy Guillaume was in the front group with me. He worked really hard,” he said. “He gave me some motivation and in the end I still had enough energy to do the sprint and it worked out well. So I have to say thanks to him for using all his energy to help give me the best chance for a victory.”
Boonen was regarded by many as the team’s leader for the race, not least because he has taken the overall classification on four occasions in the past. Although he lost time to team-mate Terpstra today, he is still in the frame and his first place in the bunch sprint shows that he has the speed to fight for bonuses.
For now, though, Terpstra will be protected and will have the team defending his jersey tomorrow.
He said that he was already impressed with how the squad has been riding. “The team was great all day,” he said. “When we had an echelon after 55km we were there with five riders. A big group came back, but not everyone. Then in the final after the bonus sprint we got in a breakaway of five. In that group we participated really well together, especially Guillaume. What he did in the last kilometer was perfect for me and I’m happy I could finish the job.”
Third placed Schär accepted the result, feeling that he was up against it in terms of his chances in a gallop to the line. “Those guys were definitely better sprinters than I am,” he said. “So in the last thirty kilometers, I didn’t do the longest pulls so I could maybe have something left against them. In the last kilometre, I was thinking of going, but then (Guillaume) Van Keirsbulck surprised us from the back. So then we just had a normal sprint. Third was not so bad for me.”
Indeed it’s his highest placing out of six starts in the race, and puts him on course to push for another top ten overall result. He finished seventh in the 2013 general classification and is motivated to improve on that.
Today’s opening leg of the race began in Al Wakra and covered 135.5 kilometres to the finish at Dukhan Beach. The peloton comprised 152 riders and these knuckled down to racing right away, with the speed very brisk from the drop of the flag.
Astana’s Lieuwe Westra was the first to break the elastic, slipping clear at kilometre nine, but he was reeled in a further nine kilometres later.
That ensured the peloton was together for the intermediate sprint at Mesaieed (km 20), where Terpstra showed his form by beating Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) to the line. Neo pro Sam Bennett was a very solid third, an effort which would prove crucial at the end of the stage when the NetApp Endura rider was given the pearl jersey as best young rider.
Twelve kilometres after that gallop, five riders pushed ahead. These were Westra, Martin Kohler (BMC Racing Team), Hugo Houlé (Ag2r La Mondiale), Jarl Salomein (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise) and Rafaa Chtioui (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team). They worked well together and quickly built a lead of six minutes twenty seconds by kilometre forty. However that would prove to be the maximum, with the bunch then splitting in crosswinds and 21 riders – including race favourites Boonen, Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing), Andre Greipel (Lotto Belisol) and Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team) – bridging by kilometre 59.
The furious racing continued as those out front sought to preserve their advantage but things finally came back together at kilometre 95.
The second bonus sprint was set to take place just over twelve kilometres later and in anticipation of that,
Terpstra clipped away and hit the line first at Umm Bab (km 107.5). Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto Belisol) and Michael Schär (BMC Racing Team) also broke the elastic and took second and third some five seconds later.
They joined up with Terpstra after the prime and pushed on together afterwards. The trio were then reinforced by Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Cycling Team) and Martin Elmiger (IAM Cycling) and, together, the quintet floored it in search of the stage win.
Although they had a mere 25 second lead with 25 kilometres to go, the gap continued to hold in spite of a headwind. With five kilometres left they were 32 seconds ahead and while the peloton accelerated slightly as the line approached, it was too little, too late and the five fought it out for the win.
Terpstra emerged best in that tussle, jumping hard around Elmiger and grabbing the stage victory plus the first leader’s jersey of the 2014 competition.
The 2.HC race will continue tomorrow with another flat, fast stage. The 160.5 kilometre race from Camel Race Track to Al Khor Corniche will see more high speeds and echelons; Terpstra and his Omega Pharma Quick Step team will defend, but also know that Boonen is poised to step forward if tactics or circumstance dictate.
