Current Vuelta a España leader Alejandro Valverde will lead a stellar Spanish team in its bid for the rainbow jersey in Mendrisio, Switzerland later this month. Twice silver (2003 and 2005) and once bronze (2006) medallist Valverde will be looking to capitalise on his Vuelta form to win the coveted rainbow jersey.

Included in the team is three-time winner Oscar Freire. The World Championship race has defined the Cantabrian’s career, and he would doubtless love to wear a record equalling rainbow jersey in what will be his final season next year.

Also present will be Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez, who is also enjoying a good Vuelta and Juan Manuel Garate, who took the prestigious victory atop Mont Ventoux in July’s Tour de France.

A notable absentee is Tour champion Alberto Contador. The Astana rider ended his season in August citing a lack of form after a tough and stressful Tour.
