Radioshack stays on top of team list, Italy now leads countries’ table
Previous series leader Simon Gerrans has vaulted back to the top of the UCI’s WorldTour ranking as a result of yesterday’s victory in Milan-Sanremo, going from fourth to first thanks to the points gained.
The GreenEdge rider is one of many who improve their positions in the Italian Classic, the fourth race in the UCI’s series.
Tirreno-Adriatico winner Vincenzo Nibali’s third place gives him additional points but doesn’t see his position change. The Italian remains second overall, and is now 28 points off the top slot.
Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde’s decision not to ride the Italian Classic has cost him his place atop the standings. The Team Movistar leader opted instead to compete in the Volta a Catalunya, which starts tomorrow, and knows a strong performance there will move him back up the table.
Some others who also missed Milan-Sanremo also slipped down, with Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycling) going from third to fourth, Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil DCM) remaining fifth, Chris Horner (RadioShack Nissan), Roman Kreuziger (Astana) and Tiago Machado (RadioShack Nissan) each slipping a place to seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Strong performances yesterday saw runner-up Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack Nissan) move from 35th to sixth, and fourth-placed finisher Peter Sagan (Liquigas Cannondale) move from 28th to tenth.
Cancellara’s points helped secure his team’s place atop the standings, with the points he picked up being more than enough to fend off a surge from sixth place by Nibali’s and Sagan’s team.
Sky drops a place to third, while Gerran’s GreenEdge squad jumps from seventh to fourth thanks to his win.
The points gained also helped ensure that Australia improved place to second in the countries’ ranking, although it wasn’t enough to prevent Italy moving up a slot into first position.
Previous leader Spain drops to third, but is expected to move back up again once the Catalunya points are taken into consideration.
The Netherlands, the United States and Britain stay fourth, fifth and sixth.
