Team Quick-Step rider Sebastien Rosseler underwent an operation performed by doctor Toon Claes at the Herentals Clinic after he was involved in an crash during the 3rd stage of the Volta ao Algarve.

The rider crashed during a decscent while he was in a breakaway group with three other riders.

“I’m very upset,” Rosseler said of his injury. “I was pedalling really well and this accident will keep me out of all the April classics, the races I love the most. Every year is the same. Last year I missed the classics because of a problem on my right knee, and now I’ve got this problem… What a shame! I’ve prepared this season very well training a lot this winter. But…I’ve got the habit and I will do all that I can to come back as soon as possible.”

Rosseler’s operation was to reduce the fracture to his left scaphoid and the triquetrum bone in his left wrist. He had a screw inserted in his scaphoid and was put in a cast up to his elbow to block his forearm and stabilize the area so it can heal properly.

Rosseler has been ordered to rest for 3 weeks, after which he can start some low intensity training with a sling. He won’t be able to return to racing for at least 6 weeks.
