Sven Nys has won his sixth Belgian National Cyclocross title since 2000. His other wins were in Ghent (2000), Wielsbeke (2003), Wachtebeke (2005), Tervuren (2006) and Hofstade (2007).
Nys was on cruise control on the last lap with fifteen seconds in hand when he made a mistake that nearly cost him the title.
“I was almost fifteen seconds ahead on the final lap and the title was as good as mine. But in the last lap I lost half of my lead by a stupid maneuver,” said the champion to hln.be Niels Albert was closing in from behind able to take chances with nothing to lose. Still, Albert couldn’t catch the flying Belgian, and Nys came out celebrating another championship on his way to the Worlds in three weeks.
Meanwhile, in Huijbergen Lars Boom won the Dutch Cyclocross championships in convincing style for the third time in a row. Despite an injured elbow, Boom is convinced he is the man to beat on his home turf in Hoogerheide.
