Portugal has had a reputation as one of the countries with doping problems in sport, and this perception has been increased following a number of raids on cycling teams in the country.
In a bid to show that the country is working hard against the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport, the Secretary of State for Sport, Laurentino Dias, has promised greater transparency as regards the release of data.
From January onwards, data such as the amount of controls done, in what form they were carried out and the results themselves will be announced every month rather than yearly.
The Anti-Doping Authority of Portugal will be the agent for those tests, and Dias believes that the increased disclosure of information will help show that it is working well.
“The fight against doping does not have to have secrets,” he told the Lusa news agency. “With the level of care that doping imposes on them, it was important to create an entity that it had autonomy and self-management in order to be more efficient in this fight.”
