Contador drops down standings with sixth place finish
One day after finishing a close second to Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank), Levi Leipheimer demolished his four second overnight deficit when he dominated the stage four time trial in the Tour de San Luis.
The American Omega Pharma Quick Step rider blasted around the 19.5 kilometre course in a time of 22 minutes 33 seconds, 23 seconds ahead of last year’s race winner Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas Cannondale).
Stefan Schumacher (Christina Watches Ofone), who won two TT stages in the 2008 Tour de France but was then disqualified for using CERA, picked up third place, 38 seconds behind Leipheimer, and one second ahead of French road race champion Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma Quick Step).
Contador started last, being the race leader, and never really clicked. He finished one minute and one second back in sixth place, and dropped down the general classification as a result.
Leipheimer was clearly the best, and was very satisfied after his performance. “I really wanted to do well today,” he said. “After yesterday’s stage and the recon we pulled on the route this morning, I knew I could compete. I really wanted to thank the team for the faith they placed in me and the guys who are here for the fantastic job they’re doing day in and day out. I think I did the best I could.
“We worked well and we’re enjoying the benefits. The time trial was anything but simple. The wind was also an important factor. We had to stay concentrated, especially in the final 4 kilometres, which were absolutely gruelling.”
Leipheimer is the new overall leader, a clear 53 seconds ahead of Schumacher. Nibali is at 55 seconds, with Contador two seconds further back in fourth place.
The Spaniard had downplayed his overall classification potential prior to the race, then surprised yesterday with his performance in the mountains. Today’s ride was, according to Saxo Bank directeur sportif Philippe Mauduit, not unexpected.
“Leipheimer was the natural favorite to take the win today and he a very good job on the time trial. As I mentioned before, Alberto (Contador) is not in peak shape and that influenced his performance today,” he said. “And he doesn’t have to peak at this moment. With yesterday’s big win, he showed his great class by winning a mountain stage after six months’ break from racing…that’s more than we could have hoped for.”
Contador gave his own reactions afterwards, saying that he was fine with the result. “It was a hard time trial, for specialists. I have cadence, but I lack training and hours on the time trial bike,” he told Biciciclismo. “Anyway, I’m happy: yesterday’s result was unexpected, today’s is normal.”
If he’s inclined to try to make a point, Contador can try to take some time back tomorrow on the second big mountain stage, the 160.6 kilometre race to the uphill finish of Merlo (Mirador del Sol). Leipheimer is psyched to resist attacks, though.
“Tomorrow will be a very challenging day but I have no worries,” he said. “I feel strong and the team is highly motivated. We’ve won three out of four stages and we’re first in the classification. Up until now everything’s been going well, our balance sheets are really positive. We’ll face tomorrow’s stage with faith in our abilities and determination.”
Defending champion Nibali will be one of those who will be determined to try to get time back. Being almost a minute down will be hard, though, and Leipheimer is in a strong position.
As for Contador, he insists that he’ll be patient. “The goal is not to be in shape now but in two months, especially in the Tour. I also want to be at a good level in the races of March and April. I am very happy with the result and tomorrow will be another day.”
That targeting of later races does of course depend on him being cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. WADA and the UCI are seeking to have the rider sanctioned for his Clenbuterol positive from the 2010 Tour de France. A decision is due to come next week.
