Corsa Rosa announces Oxfam as charity partner

giro dThe organiser of the Giro d’Italia, RCS Sport, presented the leaders’ jerseys for the 2014 race, during the Pitti Immagine Uomo event in Florence, Italy, with the four designs created by Irishman Fergus Niland to mark the race’s Belfast and Dublin start. The four jerseys, made by Santini SMS, will also feature the words “Fights for Oxfam” to mark the international organisations status as official charity of the race.

The jerseys were unveiled by Oxfam’s Cristina Chiabotto, Italian actress Chiara Francini – who comes from Florence – TV journalist Nadia Toffa and 2013 mountains jersey winner Stefano Pirazzi.

The race leader’s jersey will be pink as usual, as it has been since its introduction in the 1931 edition of the Giro, and will carry the logo of Italian confectioner Balocco for the second year. The mountains jersey will be blue, as it has been since 2012, thanks to its sponsorship by Italian bank Banco Mediolanum, the red points jersey will be sponsored by Algida ice cream, while the white, young rider’s jersey will be sponsored by fruiterer F.lli Orsero for the first year.

Along with each sponsor, the jerseys will show the race’s partnership with Oxfam, the international charity that works – as part of a coalition of 17 organisations – in over 90 countries, as it aims to find solutions to the injustice of poverty in the World.

“The Corsa Rosa stands alongside Oxfam to promote and support projects linked to rural and women’s entrepreneurship development,” says RCS Sport’s statement. “The pink, the colour of women, embodied in the symbol of excellence of the Giro d’Italia, the Maglia Rosa, brings a strong and clear social message that Giro Fights for Oxfam.”
