Back problems mean Sky rider won’t ride Tour of Beijing, Valverde only one who can stop J-Rod
Having moved twenty points into the lead yesterday thanks to his victory in Il Lombardia, Joaquim Rodriguez has today learned that he looks almost certain to win the WorldTour for the second year running.
Chris Froome, who led the standings since winning the Tour de France in July, still had a chance of taking victory by riding the Tour of Beijing, but has confirmed today that he will not take part.
The Sky rider had been suffering with an inflamed sacroiliac joint in his back and stated that his racing has now ended for 2013.
“Not the way I wanted to end the season but my body had other ideas! Looking forward to some R&R and a gelati or two,” he said via Twitter.
Team Sky has not yet commented on the withdrawal.
Had Froome been able to ride Beijing and placed in the top seven, he would have surpassed Rodriguez’s total. Eighth place would have put him level, after which the final victory would have been determined by the numbers of first and second places the riders had in WorldTour events. Stage placings would also have offered him further points.
Asked yesterday by VeloNation if he was concerned that Froome could yet scoop the victory by going to Beijing, Rodriguez said that he didn’t think it likely that the Briton would head to China. “I have heard he has some difficulty and he may not go to Beijing,” he stated during the post race press conference, which can be seen here. “If he does, I can’t do anything. If he gets some points there, okay, that is how it will be.”
Froome took the bulk of his points when winning three stages and the overall in the Tour de France. He also won the Tour de Romandie and Criterium International, taking a stage in each, and also placed second overall in Tirreno Adriatico.
Rodriguez’s WorldTour success is based more on high placings rather than victories. He won yesterday’s Classic and also a stage in the Vuelta a España and Tirreno Adriatico, but his other points came from fifth overall in Tirreno Adriatico, second in the Volta a Catalunya and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, sixth in Flèche Wallonne, third in the Tour de France and fourth in the Vuelta a España.
He ended up with a total of 607 points, while Froome is on 587 and third-placed Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) is on 540. Peter Sagan (Cannondale, 491), Vincenzo Nibali (Cannondale, 491) and Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack Leopard, 384) fill the other places in the top six.
Valverde is the only one who could catch Rodriguez, but it is unclear if he will decide to go to China. His 67 point deficit would require him to finish in the top three or, alternatively, to place highly and also scoop points through stage placings.
Although it won’t take the individual ranking, Sky looks good to win the team classification for the second year running. It has clocked up 1561 points, with Movistar on 1443 and Katusha on 1340.
The totals of Rodriguez, Valverde and others have put Spain well clear at the top of the Nations standings prior to Beijing. The country has 1841 points, dwarfing the 1082 of Italy and 1011 of Colombia.
