The cable engaged low budget shimano disc brakes on my commuter are by far the best performing brakes I’ve ever had. Super brake performance when needed and easy to modulate. I can ride on bumper of a car with those without any questions as to performance.

Next best brakes would be the ultegra calipers on my road bike.

The TRP disc brakes on my gravel bike never came close to either but low end shimano mechanicals I replaced them with are better. Curious about the new hydraulics I will get with upgrade of gravel bike. Apparently ultegra level since frame is still post mount and everything new is all flat mounted. Some of components for upgrade are stuck in a warehouse in California unfortunately.

Exactly…the point being while current containment measures are good ultimately we will need to deal with this in a fashion that can be maintained long term. You can only shut down society so long before you are causing all sorts of other damage. Already people are being laid off by the thousands.

    My current guess…
This will take until July August to run it’s course (ie get passed peak) in North America.
It will take 1 to 2 years to run it’s course globally.
Corona may become a permanent fixture like seasonal flu.

    Good read

They are self propelled Ben. All those viruses and bacteria squirming in them make it so.

And clearly you missed the pertinent Seinfeld episode.

As long as you don’t overlap wheels or cross handlebars you are fine.

    Also no snot rockets

First “road” bike from 1980 Handed over to sister in 1982 then a cousin. If it’s still alive it’s liable to still be in family.

Gazelle compagnolo record. Bought 2nd hand for 1500 in 1982 sold in 1990 for same price to a kid and his dad. Whereabouts unknown.

Giant Yukon 1993 to 2003. Ridden into ground. Put in back alley. Probably owned by a bum or druggie.

Giant TCX 2003 to 2008. Same fate as Yukon.

Orbea Ultegra. 2009 and still going.

Trek road bike. 2010 and still going. Temporarily ridden by kid but I’ve repossessed it now that Diverge is getting a makeover.

Diverge v1 2015 to 2019. Frame died in Oregon.
Diverge v2 2019. Currently being upgraded w GRX

Of course there was an infinite number of Dutch bikes that were either destroyed or stolen. Also I left one of them against a tree in south France after a 3 week bike trip.

    Yes very good lsd.

In Belgium all races up to but not yet including Flanders have been canned. It will go too shortly.

Several major soccer teams in Spain and Italy in self quarantine.

Headed to Costa Rica Saturday many fingers crossed.

CK – just like John Travolta. Figured he had Corona but it was just Saturday Night Fever and he’s Staying Alive.

Ben – between Corona and Portal, Ineos is not racing for a while.

There’s a few other teams that are not here, Jumbo-Visma among them.

I am liking Quintana for overall but he lost Barguil as key support due to crash and then DQ.

Interestingly JA mentioned he wasn’t feeling greatest coming into race.

(edit) sounds like Quintana crashed today. Scratch that. JA shed a bunch of time too. Nibali FTW.

I was wondering out loud if cancelling these events is overreaction. Not saying I think that, but in retrospect we may think that. Or not.

It’s a situation only offers wrong or bad choices and whichever way you go with it there’s certainty of negative impact.

OC, Casey Stengel was a famous baseball manager many years ago.
Some of his quotes are golden:

That makes the OP a little clearer although it is still as wordy as a baseball game is long. 30 on a group ride is bottom line too much. Sweet spot is 6-10, occasionally I can handle up to 20. Having a formal club structure also tends to keep the rifraf out. Of course none of this prevents dumb foolery by yours truly. Last weekend figured I’d pull a gravel sprint. Just as I wound up a highly broken asphalt patch came into view with a huge longitudinal crack. I barely squeaked by the crack but put myself sufficiently out of balance that the only way to stay upright was straight into the berm where mercifully the soft low hanging branches of a cedar tree stopped me. Unclip big holler and back at it. Folks are really mcgyvering tubeless?!?

In a similar vein my Diverge will be transformed to a proper gravel bike over spring break.

GRX800 series with 48/31 and 11-36 gearing for some of the planned tough rides.

38 mm tires to complement replacing the current 32s. That’ll allow dropping down a few bars. Despite the carbon frame offering more tire clearance that is still the max.

Italy has over 100 deaths, China had how many 1000s; hard to argue over-reacting with those kind of numbers although for vast majority this will indeed just blow over.

It is over-reacting in my mind in sense that the containment will just slow the spread of virus, it will not actually prevent spread. Ultimately it will go global. Costa Rica just reported its first suspected case. My prediction is it will have a bunch more after spring break travel and same will happen with other travel hot spots.

Also, things in US/UK (and I am guessing Canada) are under-reported by at least an order of magnitude. The definition of suspected cases is too narrow. The unofficial tally in Seattle area may be closer to 100, which matches the single death and mortality rate (series of interesting tweets with retrospective analysis last weekend).

Meanwhile a bunch of dudes still stuck in that hotel in UAE.

This will take about 3-4 months to blow over. Giro is a maybe, Tour should be safe. But everyone will lack racing legs lol.
