in reply to: New components for my road bike!! #36664
The clamps don’t fit? Wow, that’s a weird one. You’d think there would be ONE, just ONE single constant in the cycling industry but nope.
in reply to: Can we still ride outside? #36506Ha ha, snot shots. Too funny.
Thanks for the explanation, Ben. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Makes sense.
I went out on the Coal Creek trailer today (CK knows this one) and it was like having to dodge rolling grenades with all the toddlers on tri-cycles who are completely clueless of their surroundings. And I’ve never seen so many Lululemon-clad housewives pushing their jogging strollers. Crazy!! Figured it might be my last day to ride outside for a bit so took advantage.
in reply to: Can we still ride outside? #36502I’ve heard now that amateur riders (unlike us seasoned pros on this forum) aren’t allowed to even ride outside in Italy or Spain, regardless if alone or not. Yikes. Is that really true? Like, can’t even leave the house to walk the dog? Or ride a bike?Sure glad I have a good indoor trainer and an internet connection. Gotta do what ya gotta do but sh*t gets real when you aren’t allowed to ride a bike!Took the bike out today for a nice ride with the freakin’ expensive new brakes and – surprise – felt like new! Worth $281? Not quite sure of that.
That will be the last time I pay for somebody to bleed my brakes though. Have to learn so will spend some of this forced alone time watching YouTube! Thankfully all my bikes are Shimano and I won’t have to mess with that nasty DOT stuff.
To Ben’s point though, things were a lot easier when installing and adjusting brakes came down to simple cables and brake pads. And this coming from an early adopter of Di2!
What would you expect this to cost for my 7-year old Scott carbon hardtail with XT?New rotors, pads and brake bleed?Maybe $180? Nope, try $281!! Yeah, the complete bike is probably only worth $800 on Craigslist these days.Granted, I haven’t purchased the tools nor learned how to bleed brakes but that price is bonkers. I really want to support the local shops because when you need them, you need them. The service prices are way too friggin’ high though. I learned how to do all of my own wrenching up until hydraulic discs but I suppose i’ll need to learn that as well. And cutting carbon steerer tubes. I bet they’d charge $30 to do that alone.OK, rant over.in reply to: Where are all my bikes? #36765Dale, a white 200EMS is to die for. I don’t know why I have such an affinity towards that frame. Perfect balance of form, so clean and simple. Could also be because I was geeking out about everything cycling-related at that impactful time in my life. There was one that popped up on Craigslist in Denver a few months ago for something like $400. I should have bought it but it’s not like I would have ridden it. Like a classic car, the best thing about them are the memories.
in reply to: Where are all my bikes? #36761Ooooh, what color Kestrel? Please tell me white. I had a boy crush on that frame when I was 14. Yeah, wonder where they all ended up? I mean, they are somewhere, right? Maybe not functioning or in one piece, but they are physically somewhere.
Let’s see, here goes:

in reply to: Strade Bianche, Sea Otter cancelled due to COVID19 #36371Sorry to hear that, CK. Didn’t know there was an actual flu test. Thought there were too many variations.
Since this virus is asymptomatic for up to 2 weeks and we are in the very middle of flu/cold season, anyone that even develops a slight cough will think – and rightfully so – they have coronavirus. This is a mess.
I fully expect a worldwide economic downturn that will make the after-effects of 9/11 seem like a picnic.
in reply to: Strade Bianche, Sea Otter cancelled due to COVID19 #36369Just read that all of Italy is under lock-down with even recreational cycling being frowned upon. Goes without saying that Giro won’t be happening. Not wanting to diminish the seriousness of everything going on but I’m thinking that companies like Zwift, Wahoo and Tacx are looking at this with dollar signs in their eyes.
in reply to: Mosconi and Ineos (again) #36446Love how the DS said something along the lines of we need to support Moscon more. Nurture him so he can grow, etc. No, he should have been axed long ago. There are so many other riders that would gladly take his spot and probably have similar results but actually appreciate their position and will act as professionals. Part of what separates ‘them’ from riders like ourselves (beyond the fact they push out 4x the power and lower heart-rates) as being calm, cool and collected while riding at their limit. That’s simply being a professional. I’d lose a freakin’ TON of clients if I acted like him, going off on tirades that make my 4-year old nephew’s tantrum look like a party. Throwing a bike at someone? Come on. The chainrings or rotor could have really injured someone. I already can’t stand INEOS but the owner’s need to have an adult meeting and throw this piece of crap out.
in reply to: Anyone headed to NAHBS in Dallas? #36772I went to the show back when it was in Charlotte, so 2013 or 2014? Think that was getting close to the peak for popularity. This is just my opinion but seems like it has jumped the shark, so to speak. I remember being really impressed by Argonaut and Appleman, and of course drooling over Casati. Don’t think Vanilla was there but Pegoretti was.
Anyhow, just seems like it has lost its luster. Lot of incredible works of art, no doubt, but the exposure seems to be shifting away. To what, I don’t know.in reply to: Mathieu Van der Poel’s Canyon #36776Have you seen a recent Pinarello? You want to talk about atrocious.
I completely agree with you about the ‘cross Canyon. I understand the reasoning behind (throwing the frame over your shoulder while carrying) but surely they could have found a more aesthetically pleasing solution, something like what Colnago did with theirs.
Just another example of how engineers and designers will never really get along.
