in reply to: Mavic into receivership #36565
Was surprised at how few people they employ. 250?
I’ve been a ride or die fan of the brand since I first got into cycling. Remember how thrilled I was to build up a custom set of Campy Chorus hubs with their new Reflex rims. My first Mavic product!
I sure hope they survive but they’ve been struggling for a long time. A real shame. The yellow Mavic logo is a big a part of cycling as the Maglia Rosa or the yellow jersey.
in reply to: RIP to Colnago (the brand, not Ernesto!) #36573You mean like Pinarello? Colnago is about to lose all desirability. It’s like seeing a Maserati compact hatch for $25K.
in reply to: What mask do you use? #36498Being uncomfortably honest here but it’s so rare that I get to do a group ride that I know I’m a Chatty Cathy. I’m embarrassed by myself when I get home after realizing it. I just get all excited, talking to other people with same hobby and interest. After 42 laps of the sun, you’d think I would have grown up and out of all that childhood insecurity.
So I just ride by myself and try to beat other people on Strava. Pretty pathetic.
in reply to: What mask do you use? #36493I tried using a mask but as zootracer pointed out, made my glasses fog up. That’s why I like the Thingy so much. Enough air can escape that it let’s out the moisture rather than fogging up lenses. And it’s easy to slide down when not needed which really is most of the time during my rides. I just raise it up when passing other riders. Don’t dare ride on one of the trails right now without one. The viscious Boulder-its in their LuLulemon uniforms pushing their 2.5 kids in stroller will yell at you. Very contentious topic. Does anyone else find it pathetic how much grief people are giving over something so effing simple? Not necessarily riding with a mask, but just wearing a mask as needed. Bunch of whiny pansies. So what if you have to do something that isn’t all about you.
in reply to: What mask do you use? #36486While it seems to be a personal decision on whether you ride with one or not, fro those that have decided to wear one, what do you use? Personally, when this all started I used a cut up T-shirt to use as a mask but am now sporting a Castelli Thingy (yes, that’s the real name.) It’s great because it’s thin enough to easily breathe through and is easy to slide up and down as I need. If anybody is around, I have it pulled up to prevent anything coming from me. If I have a hill coming up and I’m not going to be passing anyone, down it goes.I’ll admit to being resistant to wearing one while riding but it’s no big deal with the Thingy. You’d almost think Castelli made it specifically for this whole mess but they’ve been offering it for years.in reply to: If your velo handle is based upon your past bike…. #36724Shooosh, don’t mention Fuzzball, Everton FC or Amanda Rose. I’m sure there are probably 10 other notorious posters. Heck, they all might be the exact same person. And if so, I really hope they get the professional help they need because Everton and Fuzzball…yesh.
in reply to: If your velo handle is based upon your past bike…. #36722Thanks Orange Crush. It’s been eons since I’ve drank any of that stuff but suddenly find myself craving for it.
Mine isn’t based on a bike but a car. Actually two of them I’ve had over the years. Mazda6. Always though they looked pretty sleek except for the second gen. Those were terrible, rental fleet fodder. Traded in one of them but the first one met it’s untimely demise at the hands of a stupid 26 year old (me at the time.) Ran it under a semi.
in reply to: Merlin Cycles Ltd, beware! #36588Hold up, I must be confused. Did this mail-order site buy the Merlin brand from Competitive Cyclist? I don’t see them offering any titanium Merlin frames. Just basic carbon and aluminum frames, so have to wonder if we are actually talking about the legacy brand (same that brought out the amazing Extralight years ago) or something akin to Walmart’s Viathon?
in reply to: New dates for the Tour, Giro and Vuelta #36421Agree with Zoot. It’s not going to happen. Wishful thinking though and hats off to them for being so optimistic.
Just saw Trump’s “we’ll be the comeback kid” for reopening the country in the coming weeks. That quote will come back to haunt him when the “comeback” is really the resurgence of the virus in May due to reopening far too early. Won’t matter. He’ll call the reporters liars and deny ever having said it even though it’s on video. The guy is pure teflon. And if you’ve watched the movie “Dark Waters”, you’ll know teflon is really nasty stuff.
in reply to: New dates for the Tour, Giro and Vuelta #36401Just saw on local news that Tour de France has been called off entirely. It’s based on decision by Macron to cancel all major events until mid-July at the very earliest.
Due to the unique nature of professional cycling, it just seems prudent to accept that it can’t happen this year. It would be irresponsible.
in reply to: Social distancing TT event #36740Clever. Sort of a modern-day interpretation of the classic british TT. Good article on cyclingnews about that.

in reply to: cleaning the chain #36614What CK said. It’s one of the simple joys in life. I barely ever ride with anyone let alone a group but take great pride in having all of my bikes – almost – always sparkling clean and silent. It allows you to hear that “whoosh, whoosh, whoosh” of your tire’s contact patch against fresh asphalt when putting the hammer down. Pure bliss.
in reply to: cleaning the chain #36609Here is what I do because I’m extremely OCD about chain wear and noise. I just slap a new chain on every 1,200-1,500 miles. A new Dura-Ace chain is only about $45 so why not?
In-between replacements, I clean with a wet rag and Simple Green (although I’ve heard that Simple Green can negatively impact the steel but whatever) and currently use Rock and Roll Gold or Red lube. Went down the wax path last year with WendWax and left dissatisfied. Since I lube my chain every other ride, wax really didn’t do much for me.
So, my solution is much different than taking apart the chain and sonic cleaning it. Seems like a colossal waste of time and a major pain. To each their own.
How is the grouppo switch coming along, CK? Did the bleed kit arrive? I really need to figure that part out so I won’t have to pay so much at the LBS.
And Zoot, I hear ya on rim brakes. My cross bike has hydro discs and the front continues to howl even after cleaning with pure alcohol multiple times. And its’ not even old. Rim brakes are infinitely easier to work with and offer a lot more forgiveness. I have yet to be in a situation where discs saved my butt.
