While it seems to be a personal decision on whether you ride with one or not, fro those that have decided to wear one, what do you use?  Personally, when this all started I used a cut up T-shirt to use as a mask but am now sporting a Castelli Thingy (yes, that’s the real name.)  It’s great because it’s thin enough to easily breathe through and is easy to slide up and down as I need.  If anybody is around, I have it pulled up to prevent anything coming from me.  If I have a hill coming up and I’m not going to be passing anyone, down it goes.
I’ll admit to being resistant to wearing one while riding but it’s no big deal with the Thingy.  You’d almost think Castelli made it specifically for this whole mess but they’ve been offering it for years.

Thanks. But it seems like we aren’t the only ones. I struck at least 5 “sold outs”.

I will not wear one while riding due to the moisture in the mask when breathing heavily becomes a trap for everything…while shopping and such I have a few from Walz Caps. Gottta keep it in the family.

Depends on where you are riding, but if you are near no one, a mask does nothing. Masks make sense for people close to each other, or indoors.

none..I ride solo, never near anyone. Besides that, a mask makes my riding glasses fog up and I would not be able to see a damn thing….

I tried using a mask but as zootracer pointed out, made my glasses fog up. That’s why I like the Thingy so much. Enough air can escape that it let’s out the moisture rather than fogging up lenses. And it’s easy to slide down when not needed which really is most of the time during my rides. I just raise it up when passing other riders. Don’t dare ride on one of the trails right now without one. The viscious Boulder-its in their LuLulemon uniforms pushing their 2.5 kids in stroller will yell at you. Very contentious topic. Does anyone else find it pathetic how much grief people are giving over something so effing simple? Not necessarily riding with a mask, but just wearing a mask as needed. Bunch of whiny pansies. So what if you have to do something that isn’t all about you.

I bought a 5-pack from Eliel….as noted above, gotta keep it in the family.

I don’t use it on the bike, since I am riding solo. I do carry it (and a pair of nitrile gloves) in a plastic bag in case I need to stop at a store for some reason.

Wearing a mask has become the de facto differing point between those who support social distancing and those that don’t. The ignorance shown by people who have no background in any science towards those that have a lifetime of experience is just mind-numbing.

Went out for a 50-miler yesterday….saw at least 4 groups, ranging from 4 to 8 riders. They are basically broadcasting to the world that the rules don;t apply to them….so people who observe them will logically say “well, the rules don’t apply to me either”.

IN the meantime, we still have ~2K deaths / day and the number of cases climbs consistently….we are not anywhere near the end of this. THIS is when it gets hard….when the weather gets nice, people are bored and the steps taken so far are actually working.

I rode past a group of about 15 which I know very well a couple days back and asked them “A Group Ride, already?” Just to get them thinking, not sure if their fixation on social riding can be overridden by logic and common sense though. So many people have posted on various social medias how riding solo is so difficult for them, how they miss riding in a club etc. I cannot imagine a mindset like that, seems fragile. The peace, tranquility, ability to let things go and almost meditate, sounds corny but to be one with the road. You don’t get that with club and team rides. I’ll take a solo ride over a group 7/10x.

I miss my group rides, too (especially our Tues / Thurs AM hammerfests)….but I’m willing to make that sacrifice. I have already told all ,y buddies that I likely won’t see them until 2021.

As for solo riding being “difficult”…..*shrug*. I enjoy both equally. They each have their place.

    Solo rides are the best.

That’s how I started as a teen. “Bye mom – I’ll see you tonight”.

Group rides are OK but I am so used to solo rides I never talk very much during. Only when we get to the post-ride beer part.

Being uncomfortably honest here but it’s so rare that I get to do a group ride that I know I’m a Chatty Cathy. I’m embarrassed by myself when I get home after realizing it. I just get all excited, talking to other people with same hobby and interest. After 42 laps of the sun, you’d think I would have grown up and out of all that childhood insecurity.

So I just ride by myself and try to beat other people on Strava. Pretty pathetic.

I just saw a photo of Gesink on his first training ride in Andorra now that they are allowed outside, wearing a mask on a col with no one around. Totally ludicrous. Glad that British Columbia is continuing on its no nonsense path, focusing only on those initiatives that actually make a difference. Most successful pandemic response in all of North America to date based on the important metrics. A highly qualified team here leading the charge on the basis of science.
