1980 Liege-Bastonge-Liege aka Neige-Bastogne-Neige. The year it snowed. And that hard man rode away to an 80 km solo victory. There is also the brilliant advice from his DS, Cyril Guimard. I won’t give it away!
Not long after Hinaults exploit I rode the cyclo version of LBL one year. It was 4 degrees above freezing with drizzle all day. Maybe this is what LSD means by Euro wet.
Unlike Hinaults DS who told him to drop the rain jacket they kept asking me if I wanted one. I killed it on Redoute that year dropping the other five in our group followed by a very cold long solo descent into the outskirts of Liege. My dad came along all day in the support van.
Kidding aside I don’t remember Hinaults ride even though cycling was very much on my radar. Maybe an 80k solo while impressive was also boring to watch for a 17 year old. Did they even have good coverage given the conditions?
I miss those old days without radios.
Don’t fook with The Badger.
