Old industry buddy hooked me up with a deal for the FSA electronic grouppo….arrived today. Will be going in on my Canyon Aeroroad and the Ultegra mechanical from that will be going on my gravel bike. Scheduled for installation next Tues…stuff arrived today. Totally digging the lever shape….excited to see how it rides. Full report to follow.

In a similar vein my Diverge will be transformed to a proper gravel bike over spring break.

GRX800 series with 48/31 and 11-36 gearing for some of the planned tough rides.

38 mm tires to complement replacing the current 32s. That’ll allow dropping down a few bars. Despite the carbon frame offering more tire clearance that is still the max.

I like the design of the GRX 800 levers….looking forward to a full report.

Well, this has turned into quite the debacle….the shifter clamps do not fit my bars. FSA sent out a replacement set of clamps, but the problem remains. tried several other bars in the shop, and they clamps only fit on Zipp bars (not Deda, not even FSA)

So today I had to send my bars and the shifters back to FSA for them to evaluate / install….and them wait for them to send them back.

The clamps don’t fit? Wow, that’s a weird one. You’d think there would be ONE, just ONE single constant in the cycling industry but nope.

    Right?!?!!?

But because of how the positioned the hydraulics, a normal bar clamp would not work….so the clamps were a u-shape and the bolts go through the clamp, then lever body and into the other side of the clamp. Basically a thru-bolt.

So somewhat unbelievably the Diverge replacement frame also cracked. This time I have no clue how or why. Bike started making noises three weeks ago but I figured it was bottom bracket after taking it for a bath in DNR on off-road ride awhile back. Zero crashes.

LBS will pursue replacement frame again but I am sufficiently convinced it’s cursed I’ve decided to forego the GRX upgrade and go straight for what I wanted to do in first place. Got a sweet discount on #steelisreal and n+1. Norco Search XR S2 w the GRX setup I wanted.

Nice! I like that dropper post. Would have been nice last summer! Might even have made a real difference for me.

Bummer about the Diverge, OC…..I had just looked at your Strava post recently with it and thought “Damn nice bike there!”.

As for the FSA WE stuff……had it on for a couple of weeks now, but only one or two proper outdoor rides. But overall, I am pretty happy with it. The main reason I got it was because the Ultegra Mechanical / Hydro shifters I had on the Canyon were just sooooo big. They were comfortable, but just big (and ugly).

New brifters are super-comfy. The transition from my new Vision Metron bars to the levers is excellent and the flat tops of the bars make for a great perch.

Was a bit of an adventure finding bars that would work, however….the brifters would not fit my existing integrated Canyon bars (which were likely knock-offs, having been bought directly from a factory in China). So I bought a pair of the Vision integrated bars, only to find out that they were 1 1/8″ and my steerer was 1 1/4″ (I had received assurances that the Visions were 1 1/4″ with an adapter down to 1 1/8″…..not so much).

So I got the Vision Metron 4D bars and used a Zipp stem I had bought for the bike when I first received the bike almost 2 years ago.

Shifting on the WE is acceptable….from shifts are little long, but rear shifts quickly. Occasionally plagued by a non-shift, followed by a double-shift, but meh, whatever….

Braking is excellent….smooth lever stroke and great modulation.

Losing the shift cables up from helped clear up the front of the bike as well. (WE is wireless from the shifters to the battery, but wired from the battery to the derailleurs)

Pics of the stuff can be found below (along with yours truly! )

Mine is a 40% off 2019 version minus dropper post which indeed might have been nice.

But the bigger difference is tire clearance. Last summer I could just fit 32s. Now I have stock 42 but still acres of space to fit wider. And then of course there’s the 30×36 spinner.

And yes your new setup looks sweet CK.

But I bet not as sweet as being able to take that setup outside in short sleeves. Haha.
