Belgian talent heads to fourth team in five years
Former U23 World Time Trial Champion, Dominique Cornu, is headed to his latest team – new Australian ProContinental outfit, Team Pegasus. Pegasus will be the fourth team in the young Belgian’s five year career.
After demonstrating huge promise with World Championship victory in 2006, Cornu signed with Predictor-Lotto and achieved little in his two years with Marc Sergeant’s team. A move to QuickStep in 2009 didn’t help things much either, but in 2010, while racing for Skil-Shimano, the native of Beveren began to show signs of the ability he has long promised, if only sparingly – a stage win and second overall at the Tour of Belgium behind Stijn Devolder was a reassuring reminder of Cornu’s possibilities.
Cornu’s result at the Tour of Belgium was not enough to keep him on Skil-Shimano though, and it was announced that the two would be parting ways some time ago.
Then came the comments from Pegasus manager, Henrik Redant in the Gazet van Antwerpen: “I talked with him in recent days, and in my opinion, we’re set.”
While Redant was not able to confirm 100%, “because the contract is not signed,” Cornu, however, was able to confirm on Twitter.
“Big news! Next year Team Pegasus, really looking forward!”
If Redant and his new Pegasus team can keep coaxing Cornu forward, Cornu could be one of the surprises of the coming season. If not, his run of unfulfilled promise will continue and another team will likely be on the horizon.
