The Mayor of Baisieux and Paris-Roubaix organizers have come to an agreement that will see the Carrefour de l’Arbre continue to be part of the race this April. Following last year’s event Mayor Francis Delrue, passed a bylaw prohibiting the race from using 500 meters in that sector of cobbles because of damage done to the area and the aggressive behavior of some fans.

The 2.1 kilometer section of pavé is an integral part in the finale of “The Hell of the North”. It provides the last major opportunity for a decisive race winning attack. Once riders complete the difficult sector of cobblestones they are left with less than 15 kilometers to race.

Just over a week ago the Mayor put several conditions for the use of the road by organizers that included prohibiting alcohol, restrictions for fans who traditionally have camped to save their place along the route, and a significantly increased police presence in the area.

Delrue met with French police yesterday and told La Voix du Nord today that he had “obtained all the guarantees necessary to secure the area in the days before and the day of the race.” He also said that in “two or three days” the by-law prohibiting the passage of the race in his district would be lifted.

Quick Step leader Tom Boonen won his third Paris-Roubaix last year (2005, 2008, 2009), and the upcoming edition will see him attempt to tie the record of four wins in the race that is held by fellow Belgian Roger De Vlaeminck.
