Van Avermaet into top ten, Vanmarcke and Terpstra clock up points

Fabian CancellaraFabian Cancellara’s sprint victory against Sep Vanmarcke (Blanco Pro Cycling) in yesterday’s Paris-Roubaix led to the Swiss rider’s third win in the race, but has also brought the additional status of becoming the UCI WorldTour leader.

The RadioShack Nissan rider picked up 100 points for his victory, upping his total to 351 points and moving him past previous leader Peter Sagan. The latter didn’t ride Paris Roubaix and is on 312 points.

“It was everyone else against me and against my team,” said Cancellara after the race. “At one point I had to do a selection because we lost a few guys. I kept fighting and I came from the groups behind. In the end it was just me and Sep and we fought for victory.

“It’s always beautiful when you win. I had different scenario in my head you have to fight to win. I never gave up but I don’t really know how I did it. My legs and my head wanted to bring me here. Now I want one thing: a holiday, and put the bike on the side.”

Places three to six in the WorldTour standings remain unchanged, with Richie Porte (Sky), Vuelta a Pais Vasco winner Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma Quick Step) remaining in those positions.

Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) is the sole new entry to the top ten, with his fourth place yesterday elevating him from seventeenth to seventh overall.

Vanmarcke and third-placed Niki Terpstra have picked up their first WorldTour points of the year on the basis of second and third yesterday, and are now nineteenth and 23rd overall.

Cancellara’s victory boosts his RadioShack Leopard’s standing, moving it from third to second overall. Also on the up are Terpstra’s Omega Pharma Quick Step, which moves from sixth to fourth, and Vanmarcke’s Blanco Pro Cycling, which goes from ninth to eighth.

Spain remains at the head of the nation’s ranking, while Cancellara’s Switzerland jumps from eighth to second, and Belgium goes from tenth to third. The Netherlands is also a mover, improving three places to fourth.

Next up are the Ardennes Classics, where Sagan will aim to ride strongly in the Amstel Gold Race and possibly Flèche Wallonne. He could overtake Cancellara if that campaign goes to plan.
