Australian Cameron Meyer successfully defended his points race title at the world track cycling championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on Wednesday. The 22-year-old finished off the event with 70 points, more than double the 33 point tally of silver medalist Dutchman Peter Schep. The bronze medal went to the Czech Republic’s Milan Kadlec.
Meyer scorched the track during the 40 kilometer, 160 lap event, lapping the field twice and picking up 20 points each time. The first-year professional on the road with the Garmin-Transitions team has a shot at two more medals this week, in the team pursuit and the Madison.
“Last year [when Meares won silver] we had some nice photos together, but we said it would be nice to have photos of us both in the rainbow jersey,” Meyer told AFP after the race.
“It was pretty inspirational seeing Anna win the 500 metres so I was pretty determined to go out there and win. I had very good form going into the race and also that I was going to be one of the strongest out there in the second half of the race,” he explained.
“But my coach was standing at trackside and telling me the rest of the field were getting tired. After that it was a case of keeping calm, controlling my breathing and just trying to control from the front.
“I’m so happy to be the world champion again,” he concluded.
