Movistar rider completed Tour de France with a sprained ankle

Andrey Amador Andrey Amador (Movistar) received a hero’s welcome when he returned to Costa Rica this week, after completing the Tour de France. A large group of supporters received him upon his arrival at the Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose before he was whisked away to meet president Laura Chinchilla.

Amador was not only the first person from Costa Rica to take part in cycling’s biggest race, but finished under commendable circumstances after spraining his ankle on stage one.

“Andrey has not only filled us with enthusiasm from the moment that they announced his participation, but throughout the competition too with the harsh conditions he faced,” said president Chinchilla.

“But Andrey demonstrated commitment, demonstrated perseverance, he showed guts to finish the Tour de France. As Costa Ricans, we are extremely proud to welcome him on behalf of the whole country because it is a source of pride, a great example for many young people at a time when we need it. We look forward many more examples like Andrey addressing the problems affecting our youth, from violence, drugs and crime.”

Amador acknowledged the honorary welcome and presented the president with a Movistar team jersey. The 24 year old has no victories to his name since turning professional but has had some high placings and has been a valuable member of the Spanish outfit since 2009.

He’s currently enjoying a well deserved break before returning to Europe for some racing in preparation of the world championships in Copenhagen.

“Now I’ll have a week to ten days of complete rest to work with the therapist getting massages, getting an ultrasound done and stretching and then see the team doctors on how my recovery is going and when I can start training loads and whether I can be as scheduled in the Vattenfall Cyclassics for August 21. Then of course I’d love to represent my country in the world championships.”
