Saxo Bank rider had said race was crucial to his buildup for Cassic defence
Following his crash during the time trial opener at Paris-Nice, Nick Nuyens’ prospect of successfully defending his Tour of Flanders title has taken a knock due to his withdrawal from the race.
The Belgian hit the deck on the descent of yesterday’s test. He was taken to hospital for treatment and evaluation, and later pledged to try to continue on.
“Luckily there are no broken bones. But, naturally, I’m sure and especially my hip took a hard beating in the crash,” he said.
“My preparations for the Ronde van Vlaanderen are only in danger if I’m unable to compete in Paris-Nice so I’m really hoping that I’ll be back in the saddle tomorrow.”
Directeur sportif Nick Gates told LeTour.fr today that the squad wanted to remain optimistic. “He spent a good night. He’s stiff and sore but we’re hoping for the best.”
That wish was however not realized. Nuyens was at the start of the race but withdrew prior to the peloton moving off. He felt incapable of continuing, and now faces a recovery process plus a rejigged race programme.
His misfortune is compounded by the fact that this year’s Tour of Flanders is regarded as one which is likely to be harder than last year’s edition due to a modified race route.
