Belgium leads nations’ rankings due to his success
Giving him double reason to celebrate, Belgian rider Tom Boonen vaulted to the lead of the latest UCI world rankings with his victory in yesterday’s Ronde Van Vlaanderen.
The Omega Pharma Quick Step rider moved from fourth to first in the standings as a result of his win, the third Flanders title of his career, and displaced the previous leader Simon Gerrans (GreenEdge).
Boonen now has 266 points to Gerrans’ 210, with the Australian opting to dispute the Vuelta al Pais Vasco rather than riding yesterday’s race.
Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas Cannondale) – who also missed the race – drops to third, on 182 points, while his team-mate and yesterday’s fifth-place finisher Peter Sagan moves up two places to fourth.
Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Oscar Freire (Katusha) slip from third to fifth and fifth to sixth respectively.
There’s little other movement in the top ten, with Michael Albasini (GreenEdge, seventh) and Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycing, eighth) remaining in the same positions as before, and Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM) slipping a place to tenth. However there’s one notable change: Alessandro Ballan’s third place yesterday sees the BMC Racing Team rider rocket up from 35th to ninth.
Filippo Pozzato, who placed second yesterday, doesn’t figure as his Farnese Vini Selle Italia squad are not a UCI ProTeam.
Nations and teams:
Boonen’s success also has a positive effect on the nations’ standings, with Belgium improving two places to first and knocking Spain and Italy down to second and third. Australia remains fourth.
Sagan’s performance yesterday has helped Liquigas Cannondale jump from third to first, bumping Sky Procycling into second. Boonen’s ride brings Omega Pharma Quick Step over GreenEdge and into third; Ballan’s podium finish shoots BMC Racing Team from fourteenth to seventh.
The UCI WorldTour rankings will be updated again on Saturday after the Vuelta al Pais Vasco, and again following Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix.
