Success for Cannondale and Garmin-Sharp teams in new Canadian event

Peter SaganUnderlining his speed with what was his third stage victory in the six day race, Peter Sagan sped home first in the big bunch sprint on day five of the Tour of Alberta.

The Slovakian rider pulled off an audacious overlapping manoeuvre at the final corner, going on the inside of UnitedHealthcare sprinter Robert Förster and then powering out of the corner to open a clear advantage. Sagan had time to sit up and celebrate his win, while behind him Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp) finished safely in the group and clocked up the first stage race victory of his debut pro season.

Sagan explained his lunge into the last corner. “It was the decisive point of the final, and it was important to be in the front. The final straight was too short and fast, there was not time to come back,” he said.

“I’m really happy about the results I achieved here in Canada as well as the performances. It was the ideal approach for Quebec and Montreal and to prepare the Worlds. And I also like a lot to race in North America.”

Luka Mezgec (Team Argos-Shimano) and Förster took second and third, with
Luke Keough (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team), Nicolai Brochner (Bissell Pro Cycling) and Charles Bradley Huff (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda) filling the rest of the places in the top six.

Brent Bookwalter (BMC Racing Team) took seventh, out of the time bonuses, and consequently made no inroads into his eighteen second deficit to Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp).

Damiano Caruso (Cannondale Pro Cycling) finished thirty seconds behind Dennis in third.

“I came into this race in pretty good form,” said the 23-year-old Tour of Alberta winner. “I really didn’t know how it would play out throughout the week. I guess it played out well. So, I’m a little surprised. It’s the biggest win of my pro career.”

In fact, Dennis clocked up the first victory of his pro career on Friday’s third stage, where he was first into Drumheller. He and his team then defended the lead from that point until the end.

The final stage was marked by an eight man break which went clear just over thirty kilometres into the 130 kilometre race. Present were Kristofer Dahl (Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis), Fumiyuki Beppu (Orica-GreenEdge), Nic Hamlton (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda), James Stemper (5-hour Energy p/b Kenda), Carter Jones (Bissell Pro Cycling), Adam Matthew Farabaugh (Equipe Garneau-Québecor), Craig Lewis (Champion System Pro Cycling Team) and Chad Haga (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies), and these crossed the prime line in that order.

However despite pulling together, they were unable to extend their lead far above a minute and, when they reached the start of the finishing circuit and the four 3.5 kilometre laps there, they had less than twenty seconds advantage.

Seeking to delay the inevitable, Farabaugh, Beppu and Stemper leaped clear and remained out front for a while longer. With two laps left they were ten seconds clear, then three became two when Stemper clipped a wheel and went down.

Farabaugh and Beppu were caught at the bell, after which the sprinters’ teams began their final push for the line and Sagan made his dive into the final corner to take the stage.
