Experienced domestique and two developing sprinters remain with blue-fuchsia-green squad
Lampre-Merida has announced the contract extensions of Matteo Bono, Davide Cimolai and Maximiliano Richeze for 2014, making Bono the second longest serving member of the blue-fuchsia-green team behind Damiano Cunego. While Bono has become an indispensable domestique in his eight seasons with the team, Cimolai and Richeze (pictured) are both part of the team’s sprint stable, and have racked up 15 podiums between them this season.
“I’m happy that my performances have satisfied team management, who have allowed me to go on racing for Lampre-Merida,” Argentine Richeze said. “During my season, I improved my competitiveness and I was very close to the victory several times. Next year I’ll have new chances and strong morale to try to hit the target.
“In the team roster there will be a very competitive group of sprinters,” he added. “I’m sure the technical staff will be able to give the proper space to everyone.”
24-year-old Italian Cimolai will be starting his third year with the blue-fuchsia-green team, having spent two years at Liquigas before this.
“I’m excited for the chance to go on racing in Lampre-Merida, so I’ll be able to continue improving my cycling skills,” he said. “In fact, I think that the team is the best place for me to reach the top level.
“I thank the [team owner] Galbusera family, [manager Giuseppe] Saronni, Merida and all the other sponsors that wanted me in the team for the next season.”
With the departure of Alessandro Petacchi mid-season, and with Michele Scarponi leaving for Astana in 2014, Lampre-Merida will be without two of its biggest name Italians next year. With the acquisition of new World champion Rui Costa, and a number of young riders, the team’s character will likely be a little different next season.
