Possible operation Wednesday for shoulder and arm fractures
Alex Carera, the agent of several high-profile riders, including Giro d’Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), is reported to be improving hour by hour in the intensive treatment unit of a Brescia hospital after being involved in a serious car crash on Saturday afternoon. According to tuttobiciweb.it, Carera was travelling on the A4 Autostrada in the direction of Milan, northern Italy, when his car was struck by another, driven by a 78-year-old man, travelling in the wrong direction on the carriageway.
The elderly driver of the other car was killed by the impact, while Carera was rushed to hospital in Brescia, where he underwent extensive surgery on his legs.
Carera’s brother Jonny spoke to tuttobici.it today, reporting that Alex was making steady improvement, despite his considerable injuries.
“I saw him this afternoon,” Jonny Carera said. “He’s quiet, you could say serene, and all his important signs are improving thanks to the commendable work by the medical staff in Brescia.
“I can say that today he has even begun to urinate again,” he continued, “and if everything goes well he will undergo surgery on Wednesday to fix the fractures to his shoulder and left arm, as well as fix some other small problems to his lower limbs.
“In short, after such a horrible sight on Saturday, we can say that we see a small glimmer of light that comforts us,” Carera added.
