American rider poised for overall victory tomorrow
Shrugging off the hills on the run in to the line, Marcel Kittel followed up his victory yesterday with another success in the Dubai Tour. The German Giant Shimano rider rode hard to stay in touch on the undulating run-in to the line in Hatta, then blasted clear inside the final 100 metres, beating Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar) and Peter Sagan (Cannondale) to the line.
Dylan Van Barle (Garmin Sharp) went early but held on for fourth, while Reinhardt Janse Van Rensburg (Giant Shimano) and Wout Poels (Omega Pharma Quick Step) were fifth and sixth.
Overnight leader Taylor Phinney also finished in the group and defended his blue jersey. With one day to go, it is looking increasingly likely that he will win the race overall.
“It was really hard,” Kittel admitted afterwards. “For me, I had exactly enough power to pass those climbs. One kilometre per hour faster and I would have been dropped. I really wanted to go full at the end and see how far I could come.
“I knew the final before and I knew that there was a 50-50 chance for me to pass it. I am very, very happy that I could make it, it was tough.”
Kittel was clear that his Giant Shimano team played a big part. “In general the team tried to help me today as much as possible, to keep me out of the wind so I could save energy for the last climbs. Over the last climb, everyone had to go for themselves.
“Our strategy was to see after the climbs who was left. Reinhardt tried to help me. It was a bit more difficult without my leadout train, but I could still make it.”
Phinney has been in the lead ever since he won the opening time trial, and knew that today was a big test for him. He credited his team for doing what he described as an amazing job. “It was the longest stage and we had virtually no help from any of the other teams, only Trek there in the last. Sebastian Lander, Rick Zabel, Klass Lodewyck; there were three against six in the breakaway and they kept it there, brought the time down and did an amazing job.”
With time gaps relatively close, many riders wanted to have a pop at Phinney, seeing if they could crack the tall rider on the ramps. However he was able to resist the efforts of the lighter riders and to remain prominent until the end.
“We got to those final little climbs. I was feeling good, I was in the right position, and just trying to keep things together, stay up there and have a bit of fun,” he said.
“They were quite testing, quite steep, difficult. But I was super motivated to try to keep this leader’s jersey and I am really happy that I passed this test.”
Phinney remains fifteen seconds ahead of his BMC Racing team-mate Steve Cummings, while Lasse Norman Hansen (Garmin Sharp) is seventeen seconds back and world time trial champion Tony Martin (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Cycling Team) is at 23 seconds. The latter was active on the lumpy run-in, but couldn’t break the elastic.
Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) and Sagan are also within half a minute but quickly running out of time to try to take over at the top.
How things played out:
The 162 kilometre third stage was perhaps the best chance for Phinney’s rivals of dislodging him from the leader’s blue jersey, with a lumpy final run in to the line giving them hope of shaking him off. Six riders had however no plans of waiting around for the finish, with this group breaking clear early on and eking out a solid lead.
The aggressors were Astana’s Evan Huffman, Alexandr Pliuschin (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team), Diogo Nunes and João Pereira (both Banco BIC-Carmim), Willie Smit (Vini Fantini-Nippo) and Ruslan Karimov (RTS-Santic Racing Team).
Smit beat Nunes and Pliuschin to the first intermediate sprint. A similar outcome was seen at the second sprint, but with Nunes and Pliuschin third and second.
Phinney’s BMC Racing Team were chasing hard and reduced the gap to just over two and a half minutes with 40 kilometres left. This provoked Pliuschin to push ahead of the others, kicking clear with 34 kilometres remaining and beginning what he hoped would be a successful solo time trial to the line.
He had two minutes with sixteen kilometres, prompting speculation that he could yet stay clear. However with eight kilometres he only had thirty seconds and he was reeled in very soon afterwards due to the acceleration in pace caused by an unsuccessful attack by Movistar’s Adriano Malori.
The Cannondale team continued to push things onwards, with Peter Sagan sitting fourth wheel and looking relatively composed. Race leader Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing Team) was also prominent and got over the top of the penultimate climb towards the fore.
The riders sped down the descent, with Sagan tucking low at the front and then being passed by his team, which continued to drive hard towards the line.
Tony Martin was thinking of both the stage win and the general classification and jumped clear with 6.8 kilometres to go Tony Martin. However he was soon caught and passed by Alejandro Valverde (Movistar). The Spaniard opened a better gap and pulled clear; behind, Sagan set off in pursuit and bridged with Rory Sutherland (Tinkoff Saxo). However there was a slight stall and Phinney and the others in the group also got back up.
Martin kicked again with 6.3 kilometres left but he was quickly marked by world champion Rui Costa. The Lampre Merida rider was hunting his first win of the year and jumped hard with three kilometres to go, opening a lead of several lengths. The BMC Racing team chased had behind and then more riders took up the pursuit, with Costa caught with just under one kilometre to go.
Phinney was sitting fourth wheel and waiting for the final push to the line. A cluster of other riders then darted forward in anticipation of the sprint, but these were all denied by an impressive Marcel Kittel (Giant Shimano), who had quietly made it over the climbs and then blasted home in front.
