Pedro Horrillo said he will make a final decision about his cycling career in December. The 35-year-old Rabobank rider was involved in a horrific crash during the eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia this year where he fell 180 feet into a ravine on a mountain descent.

His accident was only discovered when teammates who fell behind on the climb rode by the site and saw his bike laying on the side of the road. It took rescue workers 20 minutes to locate his unconscious body on a ledge below. He was then pulled out by mountaineers and flown to the hospital.

Horrillo miraculously survived the fall sustaining no life threatening injuries. He was able to successfully recover from multiple fractures caused by the fall and is now back on his bike.

When he was released from the hospital Horrillo told reporters, “It would be tough to give up professional cycling in this way but it was an accident which I will just have to accept.”

The Spaniard told Biciclismo he’s making progress on the bike but still has a long way to go: “I feel good, but I’m still far from the professional level. I ride about 60 or 70 kilometers but all at a very easy pace.”

The Rabobank rider doesn’t want to rush into a decision about his future saying, “I don’t want to take a decision now that I might later regret. I have given myself until the end of the year in December to make a decision.”
