Andy Schleck was scheduled to start his season today at the Challenge Mallorca. Instead, the Luxemburger is on his way home and nursing a knee injury, which he hopes he caught early enough as not to cause further problems down the road.

Schleck junior was looking forward to the race on the Spanish Island. “Looks like my season starts not as planned,” he said on Twitter yesterday. “I have a knee injury and will fly home to LUX [on Sunday] and take some rest.”

Andy Schleck did not seem to be too concerned about his main goal, the Tour de France, in July yet. “Everything happens four a reason. It is better to take care of it now, rather than in a month from now on.” With a “sorry, folks” he apologized to his fans, who would have loved to see him fly along the Spanish roads.

On Sunday afternoon, just when the racers hit the finish line in Palma de Mallorca, Schleck was on his way. “On the airport to hit back to Luxembourg. Good luck to the boys today and the coming days. I’ll be with them again in Andalucia!” Schleck plans to race the Vuelta a Andalucia from February 21 to 25.
