Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) took the opening stage of the 2013 Volta a Catalunya, starting and finishing in Calella, as he outsprinted a 13-man group that had escaped late on. The Belgian was easily the fastest of the breakaway, with many of those present concentrating on the general classification, and he easily overcame the challenge of Valerio Agnolli (Astana) as they sprinted side by side to the line.
In third place was Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who just managed to come around the early sprints of Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) and Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky).
“I’m in a good mood about the victory,” Meersman said afterwards. “Volta Ciclista a Catalunya was one of my objectives. I want to do well in this race.
“During the race we passed through the finish line, so I knew the final climb and the descent,” he explained. “I knew the descent was a technical one and I needed to stay near the front. I did a good job on the descent and then in the final, when I arrived at the sprint I was in the last position.
“I wanted no one to surprise me,” Meersman explained. “So, I launched the sprint very, very early – several hundred meters from the finish. After that, I didn’t think of anything but pulling and trying to do my best. I won and that’s fantastic, even considering the names at the front.
“I was forced to abandon Paris-Nice and was a little disappointed because I knew my condition was there, but I wasn’t able to show it,” he added. “So, I stayed two days at home and then went to Calpe [Spain] to train with Dries Devenyns and Pieter Serry. We did good work together and today, all the hard work paid off. Sometimes in cycling you have to be a little bit lucky and also have the good condition to do the right thing.”
The 159.3km had previously been dominated by a long break from Christian Meier (Orica-GreenEdge) and Christiano Salerno (Cannondale), who escaped in the early kilometres and managed to open up a lead of more than eight minutes before they were pulled back.
The duo was finally caught on the last of three climbs of the 3rd category Alto de Collsacreu, with less than 20km to go and, on the fast descent that followed, the winning break escaped.
Also present with Meersman, Agnoli, Valverde, Martin and Wiggins, were Danilo Wyss (BMC Racing), Robert Gesink (Blanco), Michele Scarponi and Przemyslaw Niemiec (both Lampre-Merida), Wiggins’ Sky teammates David Lopez and Dario Cataldo, Valverde’s Movistar teammate José Herrada and Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha). The group quickly opened up a 30-second gap over the chasing peloton, which was still 28 seconds as Meersman took the sprint.
Thanks to a ten-second time bonuses on the line, Meersman took the first white and green jersey of the race, but many of the overall race favourites had struck an early blow for the eventual race victory.
“I also want to thank the team,” Meersman said. “They were unbelievable today. Especially Julien Vermote and Carlos Verona. They started pulling from the beginning and if they hadn’t done this, we would not have caught the break. So, they did a great job.
“This morning in our team briefing Rik Van Slycke said the day would either be for me or Andy Fenn. So, it was my day and I am so happy. Tomorrow is another stage for riders with my skills. This is the 8th victory of my career, but the quality of this win is also important. This year the goal was to be good in WorldTour races, and more consistent throughout the season. I want to be more of a presence in the peloton, so this was a good start.”
Two men go early and the peloton gives them space
Meier and Salerno escaped in the very first kilometres of the race and, with the peloton refusing to respond, they quickly opened up a lead. Through the intermediate sprint, in Sant Esteve de Palautordera after 31km, the duo was 8’10” clear, and this was to grow to a maximum of 8’40” seven kilometres later.
Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Movistar took responsibility to police the two-man move and, within a few more kilometres, had reduced the gap a little to eight minutes, where they allowed to stay for some time.
Over the Alto de Collsacreu for the second time, after 64km, the gap was down to 7’35”, and then began to fall more quickly. At the intermediate sprint, as they crossed the finish line for the first time after 82km, it had dropped to 6’25”, and over the top of the 3rd category Alt de Monstoriu, after 117km it was down to just four minutes.
With just over 40km left to race, the peloton began to pick up even more speed and, as Team Sky took over on the approach to the Alto de Collsacreu for the final time, Meier and Salerno saw the last minutes of their lead disappear. With 24km to go, on the lower slopes of the climb, the British team swept past the two riders as they began to set up Wiggins for his attack.
The peloton was all together as it passed over the top of the climb but, as the fast descent began, the Team Sky riders at the front accelerated and a split began to appear among the overall contenders. Wiggins, along with Lopez and Cataldo began to move clear and, with Meersman, Agnoli, Valverde Herrada, Martin, Wyss, Gesink, Scarponi, Niemiec and Rodríguez spotting the move, the 13-man group began to form.
On reaching the foot of the descent, the new break was more than 30 seconds clear and, with several teams having more than one rider present, was working well to hold off the chasing peloton. Wiggins led into the final kilometre but, as the Tour de France champion neared the line, several riders began to open up their sprints.
Martin was the first to hit the front, but Meersman had timed his move to perfection and, with Agnoli alongside him, the Belgian cruised to a simple sprint victory.
The peloton was led home by Koldo Fernandez (Garmin-Sharp) 28 seconds later.
