A Belgian court has found cycling legend Johan Museeuw and nine others guilty of doping offences in what has been dubbed the Museeuw-Landuyt affair.
A legal process that has taken several years was again in the spotlight when Museeuw admitted in January 2007 that he had taken performance-enhancing drugs towards the end of his career.
Museeuw along with three other former Belgian cyclists received 10-month suspended sentences and were fined 2,500 euros.
The Veterinarian at the center of the case, Jose Landuyt, and masseur Herman Versele both were handed a one-year suspended sentence and a 2,500 euro fine.
The collective charges the men were found guilty of included importing, possessing, and using endurance-boosting drugs EPO and Aranesp.
The case itself involved four years of investigation and included tapping telephones, text messages, and police raids. Investigators reported that Museeuw himself was involved in over 200 recorded communications with the veterinarian in a very short period of time.
It is not yet known as to whether Museeuw or any of the other defendants will appeal their guilty verdict.
