Thor HushovdCervélo TestTeam’s Thor Hushovd has broken his collarbone while on a training ride in Italy Sunday.  The 32 year old collided with a young girl while out on the road, causing him to hit the pavement.

“I was out for training with some riders and accidentally ran into a little girl who was crossing the road,” he explained.  “First I tried to help her, but I soon realized that I was not able and there was something wrong. Unfortunately, I broke my collarbone. The little girl is fine.”

Hushovd started off the year slow, but battled back from illness to finish second in Paris-Roubaix, one place better than 2009.  The Norweigian was currently working on his build-up for the Tour de France, where he will still hope to defend his green jersey title from last year.

“Thor suffered a break in the middle of his left collarbone,” said Andreas Goesele, the Medical Officer for Cervélo TestTeam. “He underwent an X-ray at a hospital in the city of San Remo (ITA) and is now on his way to the CrossKlinik in Basel (SUI) for an operation tomorrow.”

The is no news from the team with regard to his return to racing, but if there are no serious complications he would be expected to heal in time for the Tour in July.
