Bunch sprint comes one day before high mountains
Skil-Shimano got the Tour de Langkawi stage win it was chasing today, but the rider who won a bunch gallop into Sitiawan wasn’t its usual speedster Kenny Van Hummel.
Instead, it was the Dutch rider’s team-mate Marcel Kittel who hurtled home first, outsprinting Malaysian favourite Anuar Manan (Terengganu ProAsia Cycling) and double stage victor Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini – Neri Sottoli) to the line.
Kittel is best known as a time trialist, having taken the bronze medal in last year’s Under 23 world championship time trial in Australia. He’s keen to show that he can do more than ride a TT bike, though, and relished the experience of winning today’s stage of the Tour de Langkawi.
“The first thing I have to say is a big thank you to my team. The lead out worked really well. I got the best position I could have for sprinting,” stated the 22 year old.
“When I look at our team here, I see two good climbers and two good sprinters,” he said. “For sprinting, we have Kenny van Hummel and myself. Today Kenny said he preferred to help me out, so I had the privilege to go into the sprint with him and Koen de Kort in front of me. We don’t want to focus on only one person at Skil-Shimano. The whole team is really strong.”
The team’s two-pronged approach to sprinting is such that Kittel insisted it will continue to alternate the sprinters and thus practice leadout combinations during the race rather than putting everything behind one and aiming for the green jersey.
In contrast, Guardini is the clear number one of his Farnese Vini – Neri Sottoli team and had the entire squad working for him today. They had two aims; to preserve his yellow jersey, and to set him up for a shot at taking his third consecutive stage win. The first of those was achieved, but the second was not.
“We wanted to keep this yellow jersey and this blue [points] jersey and we managed to do it. I tried to win the sprint today, the team did everything for a bunch sprint finish but third is a good result as well,” he said.
Sandwiched between the two was Malaysian favourite Anuar Manan. Last year he took a stage and won the points jersey, and those twin achievements represent his goals for the 2011 edition. The next two days are for the climbers, with the race going to Cameron Highlands tomorrow and Genting Highlands on Thursday; after that, he’ll think of victory again.
“We have a hard day tomorrow but after the mountains I will try to do something,” he said. “For the next sprints, we will look at strategy, see what we can change in order to win the stage.”
Guardini has one more day at the top of the leaderboard, but it is certain that the climbs will bring his reign to an end. “Tomorrow it will be impossible to keep the yellow jersey,” he admitted. “It will be too hard. But I’ll fight hard in the bonus sprints and I will try to make the time cut.”
The third stage took the riders 144.9 kilometres from Taipin to Sitiawan and had the fourth category climb of Bukit Gantang coming very soon after the start. A big crash started when a rider hitting a badly-parked truck caused ruptures in the peloton before the climb even began, then the pace applied by mountain’s leader Koen de Kort’s team further thinned things out.
He was determined to hold on to his red jersey but miscalculated. “We were trying to retain this jersey. I like this jersey and I would like to keep it as long as possible. The tactic was for the team to lead on the climb and then lead out on the sprint, as I was told that the climb wasn’t too hard,” he explained.
“That is what we did, but it sort of went wrong…I got onto the front too early and they passed with me with such speed that I couldn’t get back onto the wheel any more. It was just a mistake from my end and it won’t happen again.”
First over the prime line was Jonnatha Monsalve (Androni Giocattoi), who pipped Mehdi Sohrabi (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) and Puchong Sai-Udomsin (Terengganu ProAsia Cycling). The two points gained by Sohrabi moved him level with de Kort in the classification and while the latter would be awarded the jersey on the podium and give post-race interviews as the KOM leader, a recalculation by the judges would later see Sohrabi be named as the rider on top of those standings.
The race continued with a short-lived attack by David Pell (Drapac Professional Cycling) and Zainal Mohd Nur Rizuan (Malaysian National Team), then a prime victory by Manan in front of Guardini at Kuala Kangsar (km 32.7).
Eighteen kilometres later, Loh Sea Keong (Malaysian National Team) and Rhys Pollock (Drapac Professional Cycling) surged clear of the peloton and built an advantage of over four minutes. The bonus sprint at Beruas (km 77) went to Loh, while back in the peloton Guardini turned things around to get the edge on Manan.
The final sprint came at Pantai Remis (km 100.6) and was again taken by Loh ahead of Pollock. Neither Manan nor Guardini got points here, with the latter’s team-mates Roberto De Patre and Otavio Bulgarelli netting third and fourth.
The breakaways were finally hauled back with five kilometres to go and, avoiding a big crash inside the final three k’s, Kittel, Manan and Guardini fought it out for the win.
Next up is the Cameron Highlands mountain stage. The 137.6 kilometre race is the biggest GC appointment yet, and will reveal much about those who are genuine contenders for the race.
