Wouter WeylandtVeloNation is deeply saddend to report that Wouter Weylandt (Leopard-Trek) has died as a result of a serious crash during the third stage of the Giro d’Italia today.  The Belgian hit the pavement hard on the descent of the Passo del Bocco, which left the rider unconscious suffering from heavy bleeding and major head injuries on the roadside.

Medical personnel cut away Weylandt’s helmet in order to perform CPR, but he was reportedly unresponsive.  He was quickly flown to the hospital by helicopter, but doctors were unable to revive him.

Organizers cancelled the post-stage celebrations out of respect for Weylandt and his Leopard-Trek team.

The team released the following statement following the tragedy:

“Today, our team mate and friend Wouter Weylandt passed away after a crash on the 3rd stage of the Giro d’Italia.

“The team is left in a state of shock and sadness and we send all our thoughts and deepest condolences to the family and friends of Wouter.

This is a difficult day for cycling and for our team, and we should all seek support and strength in the people close to us,” it concluded.

Our thoughts and prayers here at VeloNation are with Wouter’s family, friends and his Leopard-Trek team.
